Darien School Budget To Increase 4.07 Percent Next Year DARIEN, Conn. -- The Darien school budget is expected to increase $3.255 million next year. The proposed budget for the 2013-14 school year is $83,293,646, an increase of 4.07 percent. The driving forces behind the increase are fixed costs, decreasing revenue and rising enrollment. Salary contracts, insurance and retirement obligations amount for about $1.9 million, or 58 percent of the increase. The schools are expected to bring in about $300,000 less revenue this year than last year, according to Superintendent Stephen Falcone. Officials are predicting that the state will reimburse the …

Norwalk Man Charged With Stealing Restaurant's Cash Register NORWALK, Conn. – A Norwalk man was charged with breaking into a Subway restaurant and making off with the cash register two days before Christmas. Tobachia Williams, 33, was charged with third-degree burglary, sixth-degree larceny and second-degree criminal mischief. He was held on $3,000 bond and will appear in court Jan. 16. Officers discovered the burglary of the North Main Street restaurant Dec. 23 while on patrol. Police Identify Body Found In Norwalk River NORWALK, Conn. - Police have identified the body found in the Norwalk River Monday as 27-year-old Alexander Fried. The body was discovered at around 9:30 a.m. Monday floating under the docks in the area of Selleck Street. The body was fully clothed and had Fried's identification in his pocket. Police said Monday there was no apparent foul play and there was no trauma to the body. Police divers retrieved the body and it was taken to the office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Farmington for a full autopsy.

Two Hand Grenades Found In Darien Resident's Yard DARIEN, Conn. – Two hand grenades were found in a pile of scrap metal in a Darien man's yard Saturday night, according to police. The man discovered the grenades around 8 p.m. and immediately called the police and fire department. Police established a perimeter and the Stamford Police Department Bomb Squad came and took possession of the grenades. The grenades did not appear to be live, police said. The man told police he keeps scrap metal on his property and friends and associates add to it from time to time. When it builds up, he said he trades it in for cash.
