Former State Employee Indicted For Unemployment Insurance Fraud A former employee at the New York State Department of Labor is accused of using his position to commit unemployment insurance fraud. A federal grand jury indictment unsealed Friday, April 22, alleges that Albany resident Wendell Giles, age 51, conspired with another NYSDOL worker to fraudulently obtain unemployment insurance benefits, including federally funded pandemic relief benefits. Fairfield County native Charlie Capalbo, age 23, of the town of Fairfield, died Sunday, April 24, following a five-year battle with cancer, according to a GoFundMe page established for his family. “After five years and 745 nights spent in hospitals, let’s just say that one got by Charlie in the 4th overtime today,” reads a post from GoFundMe organizer John McCormick. Man Killed After Vehicle Crashes Down Embankment Into River In Region A man is dead after crashing his car into a river in the region. Man Seriously Injured After Crash In Parking Lot At Long Island School A Long Island man is recovering after crashing his motorcycle at an elementary school, police said. The incident happened in Bay Shore at around 2:45 p.m. Sunday, April 24. Phone Scams Under Investigation In Area Residents in the area are being warned to look out for potential phone scammers. Supervisor At NY Drug Manufacturer Sentenced For Theft Of Medication A former supervisor at a Long Island drug manufacturer is heading to federal prison for stealing animal medication. Gregory Settino, age 60, of Bethpage, was sentenced to a year and a day behind bars Wednesday, April 20, in federal court in Central Islip. He was also ordered to pay restitution of more than $800,000. Settino had pleaded guilty to stealing approximately $750,000 worth of the drug Adequan from his employer, American Regent, in Shirley.
