Newton chose the lump sum payment of $6.5 million (before taxes) rather than the annuity.  She plans to buy a home and help her family with the winnings.   Newtown bought the ticket at Convenience Plus, 480 W Housatonic St. in Pittsfield. The store will get a  $50,000 bonus for the sale.

Ezequiel Torres, 38, of Holyoke, pleaded guilty in Hampshire Superior Court to indecent assault and battery, kidnapping, and intimidation of a witness. Judge Jane Mulqueen sentenced him to 6.5 to 8.5 years in state prison. The punishment followed a joint recommendation from prosecutors and his defense attorney. Norwalk Man Accused of Shooting Stepdaughter’s Friend, Driving Her to Hospital Police say a Norwalk man shot his stepdaughter’s friend in the leg.  The 43-year-old woman arrived at Norwalk Hospital with a gunshot wound to her legs. At first, she told staff she was struck while walking on Coldspring Street with friends. Officers later determined she had been shot inside 29 Coldspring Street, the home of 53-year-old Hugo Arturo Avilia-Garcia. Avilia-Garcia, identified as the stepfather of the victim’s friend, allegedly fired the shots. Detectives searching the house found a shell casing but said no firearm was recovered. Manchester Man Dies After Medical Emergency Leads To Multi-Car Crash: Police An 83-year-old man died following a crash involving multiple vehicles Tuesday morning, Sept. 9, police said. The driver hit a parked car near 186 East Center Street in Manchester just before 7:30 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 9. The impact sent him careening into another vehicle, investigators said.  “Preliminary findings indicate that the operator may have suffered a medical emergency before the initial collision,” police said.
