Darien Releases Rules for Shuffle Referendum Darien Releases Rules for Shuffle Referendum Darien Releases Rules for Shuffle Referendum
Darien Releases Rules for Shuffle Referendum DARIEN, Conn. – The people of Darien will come to a final decision Tuesday on the long-debated shuffle project. Voting in the townwide referendum will take place at the normal district polling places from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. The shuffle calls for moving the Senior Center to Town Hall and the Board of Education offices to the old library at 35 Leroy Ave. Voters will be asked to vote either yes or no to allocate $6.97 million for the project. In a statement, First Selectman Jayme Stevenson reminded residents that schools will be in session while voting takes place. She asked that voters use extr…

Fans Jam Darien Bookstore to Meet Clinton DARIEN, Conn. – People were lined up around the block Friday at Barrett Bookstore waiting for the chance to meet Bill Clinton, who was in town signing copies of his new book, "Back to Work." And they were not disappointed. “It was awesome in the truest sense," said Middlesex Middle School librarian Barbara Ivey. "He’s so personable. He’s the best president.”  Gene Volcy, who works in town, said he might not wash the hand that shook the former president's for a year. “The fact that he’s helping Haiti, which is my home, I wouldn’t have missed this for anything. It was such an honor.” The 550…

Letter: Commission on Aging Supports the Shuffle DARIEN, Conn. – The following letter was submitted by Amy Squryes on behalf of the Darien Commission on Aging. As Commission on Aging members, we believe the plan for a new Community/Senior Activities Center at Town Hall works for Darien. It is significant that every elected town body, each with their own particular jurisdiction, has now voted in support of that plan. The shuffle, moving Board of Education offices to 35 Leroy to free up space at the Town Hall annex for a new Mather Community/Senior Center, answers safety concerns about the Edgerton building; saves operating costs through ef…

Darien Cops Give But Charity's Need Is Still Great DARIEN, Conn. – Members of the Darien Police Department dropped off more than 200 coats at Person-to-Person on Thursday morning. The charity was happy to get the coats but said it was looking for more donations for people in need this holiday season. “We’re overjoyed. Our clients will be thrilled,” said Kathleen Bordelon, director of volunteers. But more people are in need of clothing this year than last year, she said. “The economy is not improving tremendously, and people do need coats. Now many will be able to find coats and keep warm thanks to the generosity of the community and the pol…

Kraft is the CEO of the National Veterans Services Fund and served on the Agent Orange Commission. For the past 10 years he has been an instructor of veterans benefits for the UAW annual conference. He worked to improve the grounds at Spring Grove Cemetery. Spring Grove is the oldest veterans’ cemetery in Connecticut and …

Letter: Shuffle Is Most Cost-Efficient Option DARIEN, Conn. – The following letter was submitted by RTM District 1 member John Sini. I will be voting “yes” on Dec. 13 for a second time to support the shuffle project. After spending many hours of study, I (like a overwhelming majority of my fellow RTM colleagues) came to the conclusion that the shuffle is the most cost-efficient method to meet Darien’s Senior Center needs while also delivering benefits to the broader community.  Opponents to the shuffle have falsely charged that the reconstruction of a new Senior Center at the Edgerton site would be much smaller and cheaper. However, a …

Letter: Shuffle Is a Community Investment Letter: Shuffle Is a Community Investment Letter: Shuffle Is a Community Investment
Letter: Shuffle Is a Community Investment DARIEN, Conn. – The following letter was written by Chris LaJaunie, who lives on Old Kings Highway North. Lately there’s been a lot of noise about the shuffle plan being a waste of money when we should be focusing on our schools. We all want what’s best for our children. I’d like an elementary foreign language plan, too. But the shuffle has nothing to do with that. To state the obvious, not everyone within a community will ever have the same needs at the same time. So what do we do? We support each other. When Tokeneke Elementary was rebuilt, Darien didn’t just tax Tokeneke residents. When …

Darien Man Arrested Twice on Strangulation Charges DARIEN, Conn. – A 47-year-old Darien man was arrested twice last week for allegedly choking and threatening both his mother and girlfriend on separate occasions. Police responded to a 911 call Thursday evening to 5 Natures Way in Darien, where Elias Sofranos lives with his 70 year-old mother and live-in girlfriend. His mother told police she had heard him rummaging in her bedroom and that in the past he had gone in there looking for money. When she confronted Sofranos, she said he pushed her against the wall, then started choking her and pushed her down the stairs. She called 911. She was e…
Letter: Shuffle Has Taken Long Enough Letter: Shuffle Has Taken Long Enough Letter: Shuffle Has Taken Long Enough
Letter: Shuffle Has Taken Long Enough DARIEN, Conn. – The following letter was written by James H. Rand of 31 Ox Ridge Lane.  As a third generation Darien resident I’m familiar with Darien’s conservative ways.  Our traditional “go slow” approach, combined with a system of government that makes fast decisions almost impossible, has over the years saved us from overspending on “nice to have” and focused us on “need to have” projects without busting our budget.  A new Senior Center is most definitely a “need to have” project, and the Shuffle is the least expensive, quickest way to get there.   The Senior Center has been under revi…
