Occupy Darien To Go On Despite Arrest Occupy Darien To Go On Despite Arrest Occupy Darien To Go On Despite Arrest
Occupy Darien To Go On Despite Arrest DARIEN, Conn. – After the news broke Monday afternoon that Occupy Darien organizer Margaret Rague had been arrested over the weekend, opponents of the event took the opportunity to further criticize Rague and Occupy Darien. However, Rague confirmed to the Daily Darien on Monday night that, despite the arrest, she plans to go forward with the protest. Darien police told the media Monday that Rague was arrested Saturday night and said she was walking intoxicated in the middle of the road. According to the police report, Rague was hostile toward the officers and refused to identify herself, sub…

Occupy Darien Organizer Arrested DARIEN, Conn. – Margaret Rague, the organizer of the upcoming Occupy Darien event, was arrested this past weekend on charges of walking in the middle of the road while intoxicated and being uncooperative with police. Police said that they received several calls around 9 p.m., Saturday, of a woman walking in the middle of the street near 1020 Post Road, apparently trying to hitchhike. Cars were forced to drive around her. When officers arrived on the scene, they said that there was a Volvo parked in the middle of the road, and a woman standing in front of it. She was asked to move to the sid…

Occupy Darien Draws Fire From Readers DARIEN, Conn. – Readers have reacted harshly to the idea that Occupy Wall Street protesters will be coming to Darien later this month. The comments section on the original story is filled with posts, ranging from criticisms of the Occupy movement to personal attacks on Occupy Darien’s organizer, Margaret Rague. Reader Bogs101 writes that blue-collar workers and Wall Street executives have coexisted well in town. “Try focusing on the right area, i.e., Washington, and not the people who employ or create jobs.” Reader Lvitone, who is in graduate school in Colorado, will be returning home to Da…

Letter: Stefanoni Doesn't Want 35 Leroy DARIEN, Conn. – I heard that a reason for the shuffle is fear that I will get my hands on the old library site. This scare tactic is baseless. I do not want that site, and never have, and will bind it in writing if anyone wants. I have my eye on other things. The town is unlikely to extract good value out of 35 Leroy. It dropped the ball with the Procaccini site, and I believe someday will even regret the outcome of the land at the Ox Ridge Hunt Club. It is never smart to be dumb about money, and ideas orchestrated by trust fund babies are a sure way for the town to lose value. The shuffle …

Darien Residents Form Group to Support Shuffle Darien Residents Form Group to Support Shuffle Darien Residents Form Group to Support Shuffle
Darien Residents Form Group to Support Shuffle DARIEN, Conn. – After a group of Darien citizens rose up to oppose the shuffle plan to move the Senior Center to Town Hall, another group formed to make sure the shuffle goes through. “Vote Yes Darien” is trying to convince residents of the need for a new senior center ahead of the referendum on Dec. 13. Joe Pankowski from the Commission on Aging is chairman of the group. He said its members found one another online and wanted to get the word out that Darien needs to stop debating the Senior Center plan and build a new one at Town Hall. The shuffle became a major issue in this year's electi…
Darien Split Between Two Reps After Redistricting Darien Split Between Two Reps After Redistricting Darien Split Between Two Reps After Redistricting
Darien Split Between Two Reps After Redistricting DARIEN, Conn. – Some Darien residents will have a new delegate in the state House of Representatives. A new redistricting map released this week by the state Reapportionment Committee shows Darien will now be in two districts, instead of just one. The entirety of Darien had previously been contained in the 141st District, along with Rowayton. The town’s representative in the House is Republican Terrie Wood of Darien, who is now in her second term. For the 2012 election, the northeast corner of town will be part of the 147th District. This district previously encompassed parts of Stamford an…

Letter: Darien Senior Center Has Only Gotten Worse DARIEN, Conn. – Fifty-some years ago, I climbed the child-sized steps at 30 Edgerton St. every day. This was Hollow Tree School, where during the Cold War years, we hid under our desks during air raid drills, imagining a bomb might come through the ceiling. Last summer, I again scaled those steps for a volunteer job at the Darien Senior Center. I was shocked. Aside from the obvious decay, nothing had changed. Even the toilets were just as I remembered – Lilliputian.   The director of the center, Beth Paris, is creative and tireless, but even she cannot change the effects of time on this bui…
Letter: Shuffle Is Bigger Than It Needs To Be Letter: Shuffle Is Bigger Than It Needs To Be Letter: Shuffle Is Bigger Than It Needs To Be
Letter: Shuffle Is Bigger Than It Needs To Be DARIEN, Conn. – Darien needs a new senior center, but the shuffle isn’t the answer. Why do we need a 23,000-square-foot senior center? That would give Darien a senior center that is twice the size of New Canaan’s, 1.5 times the size of Ridgefield’s, and 1.9 times the size of Westport’s (and Westport has a senior population that is nearly two times the size of Darien’s). And why are we spending $2.6 million to move 30 full-time Board of Education employees at a cost of $86,000 per person when the Board of Education never asked to be moved and has no need to do so? Let’s focus on our needs, …
