Darien Honors Responsible Teen Behavior Darien Honors Responsible Teen Behavior Darien Honors Responsible Teen Behavior
Darien Honors Responsible Teen Behavior DARIEN, Conn. – Wednesday, Nov. 30, has been proclaimed National SADD Day in honor of Darien kids dedicated to reducing destructive behavior among teens. The proclamation was issued by First Selectman Jayme Stevenson.  Students Against Destructive Decisions, founded in 1981 as Students Against Drunk Driving, is celebrating its 30th anniversary. The Darien chapter operates out of the Depot. Members work to educate their peers about dangerous behavior such as underage drinking, drugs, impaired and reckless driving, teen violence and suicide. What do you think of the work being done by SADD? T…

Occupy Wall Street Protesters To Head to Darien DARIEN, Conn. – The Occupy Wall Street movement is going to Darien at the end of the month. Darien resident Margaret Rague has invited protesters to express themselves at Tilley Pond Park on Dec. 21 and 22. “This is a very wealthy town, and I feel like instead of sitting in Manhattan, detached, they should come here to where the wealthy do live and strike up a conversation,” Rague said. She is organizing Occupy Darien to encourage a meeting between the 1 percent and the 99 percent. She picked a time near the holidays because she hopes that people doing Christmas shopping in downtown Darien …

Darien Police Warn of 'Vegas' Phone Scam DARIEN, Conn. — Be wary if you get a call from Las Vegas saying that you've won a sweepstakes. Darien Police say someone is calling residents and trying to scam them over the phone. So far, two residents have received calls from someone claiming to be from Las Vegas, Police Lt. Ron Bussell said. They are told they have won $250,000 and a brand new Mercedes in a sweepstakes. All they have to do is send $250 to cover the taxes. Bussell said the caller tries to play on the gullibility of the targets, asking them to send the money quickly so they can receive their prize as soon as possible. One…

U.S. Attorney David B. Fein announced the indictment last week. It alleges that from February to July, Aydin, Cilek, Graham an…
Darien Woman Sheds Light on Transgender Immigrants Darien Woman Sheds Light on Transgender Immigrants Darien Woman Sheds Light on Transgender Immigrants
Darien Woman Sheds Light on Transgender Immigrants DARIEN, Conn. – The plight of transgender illegal immigrants is probably a mystery to most people. But Darien native Isabel Castro is working on a documentary that will share the tale of three transgender women from Mexico who fled to Los Angeles. “Crossing Over” focuses on Francis Murillo, Brenda Gonzalez and Abigail Madariaga. All three come from rural areas of Mexico and suffered physical, emotional and sexual abuse at the hands of family, friends and police because they are transgender. “Their story is fascinating. The cultural and social pressures in Mexico just made it impossible for …
Letter: Shuffle Is the Right Plan for Darien Letter: Shuffle Is the Right Plan for Darien Letter: Shuffle Is the Right Plan for Darien
Letter: Shuffle Is the Right Plan for Darien DARIEN, Conn. – The following letter was written by Ruth Anne Ramsey, a former member of the Darien Advisory Commission on Aging and Affordable Housing. An affluent and upscale community like Darien should be embarrassed to fight over a Senior/Community center that has been vetted and approved by every board that needed to approve it. There is a point where we have to get over trying to be right to make others wrong and just do the right thing for our town. I think the opposition to the approved plan should sign up for classes at the current Senior Center and invite friends, like I have tri…
Letter: Let's Support the Darien Shuffle Project Letter: Let's Support the Darien Shuffle Project Letter: Let's Support the Darien Shuffle Project
Letter: Let's Support the Darien Shuffle Project DARIEN, Conn. – It’s disappointing to know that some parents are against the shuffle solely because referendum proponents argued, with no basis in fact, that it would take funds away from education. Education in Darien has always been supported by seniors and those without school-age children. It would be unfortunate if each educational expenditure faced a referendum organized by those without school-age children. In the years the Senior Center has been discussed, I have seen no proposal that is better than the shuffle. It maximizes use of town-owned facilities and doesn’t preclude the sale …

Darien Kids Plant Bulbs at Ox Ridge DARIEN, Conn. – The second-graders at Ox Ridge Elementary planted 200 flower bulbs last week for the school’s new edible garden. Green Team co-chairs Sarah Sealy and Kristin Collier taught the children how to plant five kinds of bulbs that will eventually bloom into tulips, alliums, grape hyacinths, daffodils and crocuses. Each student was given two bulbs to plant. In the classroom, the students learned about the different parts of a bulb and wrote about how the bulbs look, feel and smell. What’s your favorite kind of flower? Tell us in the comments below.
Letter: Vote No to Stop the Darien Shuffle Letter: Vote No to Stop the Darien Shuffle Letter: Vote No to Stop the Darien Shuffle
Letter: Vote No to Stop the Darien Shuffle DARIEN, Conn. – Please vote NO to stop the shuffle on Dec. 13.  The shuffle’s primary goal is to provide an appropriate and safe facility for seniors. I am not persuaded that Darien needs to relocate the Board of Education to expensively renovated space, nor a full-service Community Center, to meet that goal. Unfortunately, our elected officials did not consider other options before voting to increase our indebtedness by $6.979 million. Worse, they did not seek solid information about operating expenses for a full-service Community Center. These failings affect every taxpayer, especially (a…
