Darien Artist Paints the Town Red ... and More DARIEN, Conn. Linda Lyons of Darien has been a lifelong student of art, at schools here in the U.S. and in Europe. Her first solo show at the Darien Rowayton Bank is a salute to Darien, colorful representations of familiar spots around town. Ive always loved painting. Its my passion, she said. She particularly likes en plein air, a French term for painting scenes outdoors, which is how she works around town, capturing such favorite spots as the Rings End Bridge and Pear Tree Point, as well as such buildings as the Darien Community Association and 1020 Post Road. Lyons has studied pain…

Darien Store Gives Early Dose of Christmas Spirit DARIEN, Conn. Even though it's not yet Thanksgiving, inside Goldenberry on Post Road it feels like late December. Holiday music plays over the speakers, and all over the store are Christmas-themed decorations, plates, foods, cards, wrapping paper and pillows. "People get so caught up in the rat race, but they say they come in here to get into the holiday spirit," said manager Deb Hecht. She said customers often find themselves humming along to the music while trying to get an early jump on their Christmas shopping. Darien Toy Man Picks This Year's Best Playthings DARIEN, Conn. Darien Toy Box owner Bill Jensen knows which toys kids like the best by watching them in his store and seeing what they play with the most. Parents should know how their kids like to play and buy toys that will have extended value and help children develop, he said. "You can buy a kid a Tickle-Me-Elmo for $30. You give it to them and they take Elmo and they play with it and press his stomach, but half-an-hour later Elmo's sitting on a shelf," he said. Spend the same amount on toy trucks or train sets, and kids will likely get more hours of play out of those toys before growin…

Letter: Darien Little League Adds Diversity DARIEN, Conn. In a small and often complacent town, it can be unpopular to challenge the status quo and seek positive change. However, without people who are willing to speak up, our community will remain provincial and exclusionary. Over the last year, my husband publicly lobbied and challenged the perpetually homogeneous all-white and all-male 23 member Board of Directors of Darien Little League to become more inclusive and open its doors to a woman, a person of color, a representative of special needs children and even a minister. My husband had volunteered as a Little League coach for …
