Darien Runs To Help Out Japan Darien Runs To Help Out Japan Darien Runs To Help Out Japan
Darien Runs To Help Out Japan Darien High runner Michael Johnston decided to go that extra mile—actually, two—to help the people of Japan recover from the devastating earthquake and tsunami earlier this year. So he set out to raise money and show that people in Darien care about Japan by having them run two miles on the high school track. "I just felt that after the incident in Haiti there were all these media reports and fundraisers, but after this incident there weren't really enough people supporting Japan," he said. Hearing about a successful run for Haiti in San Francisco inspired Johnston do something similar here…
Darien Cancer Survivor Uses Art To Celebrate Life Darien Cancer Survivor Uses Art To Celebrate Life Darien Cancer Survivor Uses Art To Celebrate Life
Darien Cancer Survivor Uses Art To Celebrate Life Darien native Jamie Buchanan doesn't remember much from the time that she spent in the hospital four years ago with a brain tumor. But one of her memories is of doing art projects with her child life specialist. After being discharged, cancer-free, she continued to work on creating colorful and uplifting art, which she now sells to raise money for cancer organizations. "When I started, it was a very healing experience, a way of turning the negative into the positive," she said. Buchanan mixes all kinds of mediums, such as colored pencils, markers, paints and glitter, and likes to throw in in…

Darien Artists Burn Bright at Rowayton Show Darien artist Andrea Bonfils doesn't stick to just oils and other medium to create her artwork. She mixes them with wax heated by blowtorches, electricity, irons and other tools in a process called encaustics. Bonfils, whose work is on display at the Community Cooperative Nursery School in Rowayton, has been painting, drawing and sculpting her whole life. But she has focused on painting full time for the past 13 years. "My work is kind of edgy, abstract, representational. There are a lot of things to see. Some you find immediately, and some you find later after looking at it for a while." S…

Darien Dives Into Town Pool Idea on Facebook Adding a pool to Town Hall would make an already complicated parking situation even worse, says Darien town employee Pat Gavin Alessi. Although Alessi says he would love to see a town pool, he says another location would be better. "Especially when I go out during my lunch hour to run an errand, I come back and there's no employee parking spaces left," Alessi wrote on The Daily Darien's Facebook page Wednesday. "I feel the best place would be at DHS. The students could use it during the day for gym classes and swim team practices and at night and weekends the public would be able to use it."…
Organizers Get Set for Darien Road Race Organizers Get Set for Darien Road Race Organizers Get Set for Darien Road Race
Organizers Get Set for Darien Road Race Chuck Waggner started sponsoring and running in the Darien Road Race back when it started in 1979 to benefit the Community Fund of Darien. Organizers are getting things set to run the race in September. As a cancer survivor, Waggner says the race has added meaning now that it benefits the cancer centers at Stamford and Norwalk hospitals. "I was sponsoring it as I was running it, as a way to support the local community. A lot of people think that because we're in Darien there aren't needs, but there are a lot of needs. I think people are becoming more aware of that," said Waggner, who is spon…

Darien Floats Idea of a Pool at Town Hall With temperatures due to reach 91 degrees on Wednesday and 92 on Thursday, many Darien residents probably wish they had more pools in town. Selectman Jayme Stevenson said the addition of a public pool at Town Hall is on the Board of Selectmen's radar once the shuffle project is finished. "It is still a thought in our minds, but it's not a piece of the puzzle. It's independent of the shuffle project," she said. "If the shuffle project is approved and gets under way, we see the potential for another public swimming pool at Town Hall." The plan calls for an indoor pool placed behind Town Hall,…
