Darien Students Gear Up for Design Competition Darien Students Gear Up for Design Competition Darien Students Gear Up for Design Competition
Darien Students Gear Up for Design Competition The members of Darien High School’s Fuel Cell Team have been working from early morning to late at night on their newest super-efficient car. For team business manager Matt Gentile, it’s meant balancing his commitment as an electric violinist for the orchestra with preparations for next month’s Shell Eco-Marathon in Houston. The challenge seems like it would be daunting even for a professional auto engineer. "The goal in the competition is not speed but efficiency,” said head student engineer Ryan Dirvan. “We're trying to build the equivalent of 1,500 miles to the gallon." The high school…

Getting Organized: The Paperwork Pileup The following is a submitted article by reader Seana Turner, the second in a series on getting organized. If you would like to submit material to be published on The Daily Darien, send it to [email protected]. Are you drowning in paperwork? This is one of the most common problems I run into as a professional organizer. Even though we are supposedly becoming a "paperless society," there is still a lot of paper out there! A good place to start is to SORT what is out on surfaces. Gather all of the paperwork, bills, catalogs, schoolwork, etc., that is lying around on tables or count…

N.J. Man Charged With Punching Darien Woman A New Jersey man was arrested on charges of beating a Darien woman in her Post Road apartment. Police received a call last Wednesday at noon from a woman who claimed a man named Robert Rush of Whiting, N.J., had beaten her. The police went to her apartment building at 397 Post Road and found her standing outside with her face bloodied, bruised and swollen. She said Rush was still in her apartment. When officers went inside they found him face down on the floor, snoring. The woman said Rush had been drinking and when she tried to wake him up he got up swinging. He then twisted her arm, pushed …

P&Z Rejects Hoyt St. Affordable Housing Plan Another affordable housing application was shot down by Darien Tuesday night. The Planning and Zoning Commission said the Hoyt Street project from developers Christopher and Margaret Stefanoni was a health and safety hazard. "These are people who have no experience, who haven't built one stick of residential property," said Fred Conze, chairman of the commission. The decision comes two weeks after the P&Z rejected a similar proposal by the couple for Tokeneke Road. As it did with that project, the commission said they would approve a substantially modified proposal that would reduce t…
Snow Will Rear Its Ugly Head Once Again Snow Will Rear Its Ugly Head Once Again Snow Will Rear Its Ugly Head Once Again
Snow Will Rear Its Ugly Head Once Again It looks like we haven't seen the last of the terrible winter that bombarded Darien with more than 70 inches of snow this year. Even though spring has arrived and the sun is shining warm and bright, a little more snow is on its way this week. The National Weather Service is reporting an 80 percent chance of snow for Wednesday, mainly after 2 p.m. The high temperature is predicted be near 37 degrees, with a total of less than an inch of snow expected. It won't stop there, however. Another 1 to 3 inches of snow is expected Wednesday night. Thursday could bring more snow in the morning, as the …

Darien Updating its Town Charter Darien's Town Charter is getting a facelift. In a presentation to the Representative Town Meeting Monday night, Frank Kemp and Sarah Seelye of the RTM's Town Government Structure and Administration Committee outlined their plan to bring the document up to date and make it easier to comprehend. "Most of us are older than this charter," Kemp said in his presentation. The charter, which basically acts as the Constitution for the town, was not created until 1959, even though the town was incorporated in 1820. Since its creation, it has been amended 23 times, but only three of the updates were m…

Woman in Crash Disobeys Police, Gets Arrested A car accident in the parking lot of the Stop & Shop on Heights Road in Darien landed a woman in jail last Wednesday. A woman from Wilton was making a left turn into a parking spot when Anna Salaam, 39, of Warwick, N.Y., allegedly tried to pass her on the left. The two cars collided, causing minor damage. The Wilton woman, who had her 3-year-old daughter in her car, told police that Salaam made her nervous and was taking multiple pictures of her daughter. At one point, Salaam leaned into the car and made a crude hand gesture, police said. When police arrived, they told Salaam to go to he…
