Stefanonis Play Hardball With Darien P&Z Darien affordable housing advocates Chris and Margaret Stefanoni have turned down the town’s request for more time to consider the couple’s housing proposal for Hoyt Street. Last week the town’s Planning & Zoning Commission rejected a similar proposal from the Stefanonis for an affordable housing development on Tokeneke Road. "Any reserve of goodwill has been lost, not by our doing, but by the repeated bad faith, actions and strategy of continual delay by the Planning & Zoning Commission, as well as the overall disrespect exhibited toward the affordable housing applications," the …

Decriminalizing Pot's a Mistake, Darien Cops Say Darien Youth Detectives Mark Cappelli and Sam Boccuzzi oppose a plan supported by Gov. Dannel Malloy to reduce the penalty for possession of less than an ounce of marijuana. "It's a gateway drug, that's the biggest thing," Boccuzzi said. "Also, today's marijuana is more potent than it was 20 years ago." Malloy wants the penalty for possession of less than an ounce of marijuana to be reduced from a crime to an infraction. Currently, possession of less than 4 ounces can bring a year in prison and a $1,000 fine. Malloy says offenders should pay just a $100 fine, arguing that these cases wast…

Darien Train Riders Still Face Parking Problems Darien commuter Mike Stambaugh uses parking vouchers when he parks his car at the Noroton Heights train station to travel into the city. He said the $3 a day fee does not bother him much, but there is no end in sight for his wait on the list to receive a much more cost-efficient parking permit. "I've been on the list for three years. I haven't heard the phone ring telling me I've got one. I don't know if they'll call me or if I have to reach out to them." Stambaugh isn't likely to get a call anytime soon. The wait for a parking permit is still years. Jim Thistle moved to town eight months a…

Cafero Addresses State Budget Crisis The following is a report on a talk given by State Rep. Larry Cafero. It was written by Darien Republican Club member Martin Skala. At a Republican Club of Darien Speakers' Forum held March 5, State Rep. Larry Cafero Jr. addressed the state's budget crisis by calling for cuts in government spending rather than further tax increases. In keeping with the club's 2011 forum theme, "Tightening the Belt," the House Republican leader in Hartford assailed Democratic Gov. Dannel Malloy's 2011 budget proposal as lopsided, neglecting to trim spending while raising a wide range of state taxes on proper…
