Getting Organized: Where Do I Start? The following is an article submitted on staying organized from reader Seana Turner, a professional organizer. This is the first in a series of articles on the subject. Around this time of the year, many of us find ourselves looking around our homes and thinking, "What a mess!" Indoor living has left an accumulation of clothing, paperwork, books and general clutter in every nook and cranny of our homes. Rather than a place of peace and sanctuary, home has become an overwhelming "to do" list. As a professional organizer in town, I'm here to tell you that winter is a great time to get your sp…

Darien Plastic Bag Foes Host Art Show The Darien group Choose to Reuse is hosting an exhibit of art objects made from recycled plastic to promote its fight for a ban on plastic bags. The exhibit, which opened Sunday at the Darien Nature Center, is called In the Bag. It was curated by husband and wife Peter Wormser and Liz Milwe, who helped ban plastic bags in Westport.  "It's worked out really well," Wormser said of the ban in Westport. "The store owners were initially against it, but then they realized that it's good PR, and that they can sell reusable shopping bags. It takes a little while to make the change. The consumers se…

Darien Special Ed Faces a $476K Deficit The high cost of special education has caused a deficit in the Darien school system's budget, which also happened last year, according to Director of Finance Richard Huot. The budget this year is expected to fall short by $476,879. The costs come from tuition costs for special education students enrolled in private schools outside the district. At the beginning of the year, the school system had apportioned $1,128,458 but had spent $1,722,433 by the beginning of March. Huot said he expected the final costs to be $2,254,818 by the end of the school year. Board of Education Chairwoman Kim Wes…

Exhibit Shows Civil War's Lasting Impact on Darien A new exhibit at the Darien Historical Society that chronicles the town's involvement in the Civil War shows how elements from the war still resonate in town today, including in the names of major roads, the voting patterns and the history of the Fitch's Home for Soldiers. "Fitch's Home was the first veterans' home in the country," said Susan Bhirud, education coordinator for the society. "It was built right where the Allen O'Neill houses are now. When it was first built during the war, there weren't any disabled veterans, so it housed Civil War orphans." As the orphans grew up and moved ou…

Darien Players Lift Weights for a Good Cause When the Darien High School football players go into the weightlifting room Friday afternoon, they will be working to build more than just muscle. They will be lifting to help support a charity inspired by the sister of a former team captain, a cause that coach Rob Trifone said the players are driven to champion. "Because it's personal and it's someone in town that they know, they've really taken it to heart," Trifone said Thursday at the first day of the Lifting Grace event.
