Caller Reports Rumor of Bomb Threat An anonymous caller reported a bomb threat at a gas station to the Darien police last Wednesday from a pay phone outside Dunkin' Donuts. The caller reported hearing rumors of explosives being placed at an Exxon gas station on Post Road. Two gas stations on the Post Road were formerly Exxon stations but one is now a Sunoco station and the other is a Gulf station. Both businesses were temporarily evacuated, and Metropolitan Transportation Authority police brought a bomb-sniffing dog to each location. They also sent the dogs to both platforms of the Darien train station. No explosives were foun…

Photographer Revisits the Rockies Photographer Ted Skeen spent eight years in Rocky Mountain National Park, giving lectures and leading photo walks. He returned to the East Coast 10 years ago but relives the Rockies experience by giving photo presentations, like the one he will do Monday at the Darien Senior Activities Center. "The views were fantastic, the wildlife was spectacular and I got to interface with 1,000 people who came on the walks and lectures every week," he said. Skeen worked at Kodak for 33 years, retiring in 1990. He then opened his own studio to focus on portraiture and glamour shots for models before Koda…
Darien Composer Knows the Score Darien Composer Knows the Score Darien Composer Knows the Score
Darien Composer Knows the Score Bob Lydecker got his start in music at a young age in Darien. And it has taken him through USC's Scoring for Motion Pictures and Television graduate program all the way to composing the music for a web series that has drawn 22 million viewers. That series, "First Day," is about a high school student who repeats the first day of freshman year over and over. "It was a great experience all around. It was a lot of fun to watch the story progress and see what happened to the characters through the episodes," Lydecker said. "At the same time, figuring how to mirror that with the score always kept…
Students Bring Quidditch to Real Life Students Bring Quidditch to Real Life Students Bring Quidditch to Real Life
Students Bring Quidditch to Real Life Darien High School students are not letting their lack of magical powers prevent them from playing Harry Potter's favorite sport of Quidditch. Instead of flying on broomsticks, students run with them between their legs and let their athleticism and love of all things "Harry Potter" make up for the fact that the game's balls are not enchanted. "About three years ago, a group of seniors thought it would be funny to start playing Quidditch," said Sean Otterspoor, the club's faculty adviser. "They were inspired by Middlebury College, which started the official intercollegiate league." Quidditch…
What Darien Is Thankful For What Darien Is Thankful For What Darien Is Thankful For
What Darien Is Thankful For It's Thanksgiving, a time to reflect on what we are most grateful for. Here's what some people around Darien had to say on the topic: "First and foremost, I am thankful for my wonderful family," said Kiki Karpen, executive director of the Community Fund of Darien. "I have an amazing family, and I am perpetually grateful for my husband and two children, and my extended family as well. I'm also grateful for a very caring community, who give their time, effort and money. I think we have an amazing number of resources that many people don't know about, and I'm so thankful we have a very supporti…

Darien Principal Embarrassed by Incident In an email sent to Darien High parents this afternoon, Principal Dan Haron addressed the vandalism committed at New Canaan High School by five Darien High football players overnight. "As upsetting as the incident might be, however, I think it is also important to remember that throughout the championship games this year, our student spectators, for the most part, have exhibited appropriate and sportsmanlike behavior of which we all can be proud," Haron said. He pointed out that Darien received praise from the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference for its conduct in a game aga…

The man does not own a cell phone and suffers from medical issues. Police responded and began to trace his route back, shining flashlights and calling his name. They found the man on the ground near the tra…
Schools Translate World Languages Plan Schools Translate World Languages Plan Schools Translate World Languages Plan
Schools Translate World Languages Plan Judith Pandolfo, assistant superintendent for elementary education, spelled out a plan to the Board of Education at Tuesday night's meeting on how foreign languages could be expanded into the elementary schools. But a final decision will have to wait until the budget is drawn up in January and the district determines whether it can pay for the program. "Research shows that foreign language stimulates brain development, particularly parts that not stimulated in other areas that we provide in our schools," Pandolfo said. "And there are cultural and social benefits that come from it, like resp…
