Church Gets into Thanksgiving Spirit Church Gets into Thanksgiving Spirit Church Gets into Thanksgiving Spirit
Church Gets into Thanksgiving Spirit Members of the First Congregational Church of Darien got into the holiday spirit Sunday at the annual Dressings to Drumsticks Thanksgiving Fair, hosted by its Women's Association. Association president Hazel Capella and other members dressed up in Pilgrim garb to celebrate the holiday. "This is our biggest event of the year," Capella said. Baked goods as well as homemade crafts, knitted scarves and shawls, jewelry and art by local artists were for sale. "All the money raised goes to the Women's Association, who use it to support charities." Kids got a chance to take part in face painting an…

Kids Bring Bagels To Your Door Kids Bring Bagels To Your Door Kids Bring Bagels To Your Door
Kids Bring Bagels To Your Door Some Darien residents wake up Sunday mornings to Upper Crust bagels delivered right to their doors, courtesy of Zach and Lindsay Dimonekas. The two Darien kids, who are 11 and 8 years old, started their bagel delivery service almost a year ago. "We send out e-mails every week and deliver every Sunday morning," Zach said. The e-mails always have a little rhyme with a timely theme, such as Halloween or the Yankees when the Bombers lost in the playoffs. The business started when their dad, James, came home and told them about a friend who had run a similar business when he was a kid. James sug…
Arctic Wolf to Drop in at Nature Center Arctic Wolf to Drop in at Nature Center Arctic Wolf to Drop in at Nature Center
Arctic Wolf to Drop in at Nature Center People don't often get to see wolves up close and in person, but that will change Sunday when Atka the wolf from the Wolf Conservation Center in New York visits the Darien Nature Center. "They have a very informative slideshow that helps people understand the story of wolves: Where they are and how they've been driven away and the role they play in the ecosystem," said Lynn Hamlen, executive director of the nature center. "Then they bring out Atka, and they explain his story." Atka is an 8-year-old Arctic gray wolf. He has lived at the Wolf Conservation Center his entire life and travels ar…

Teens Take on 'Tech' Topics With Parents Social media was the big topic when members of the Darien Thriving Youth Task Force and members of the Holmes Elementary School PTO got together Wednesday night. "Don't let your kids get Facebook until they get to high school," said Evan Rogers, a student at Darien High School and member of the Task Force's Youth Asset Team. "It's not really for middle school kids. There's no reason for them to have a Facebook." Other issues discussed included underage drinking and bullying, but most of the parents' questions centered on such topics as texting and Facebook. Moira Rizzo, a marriage and famil…
Falcone Outlines Goals to Parents Falcone Outlines Goals to Parents Falcone Outlines Goals to Parents
Falcone Outlines Goals to Parents Superintendent Stephen Falcone outlined the goals and objectives of the Darien school district Wednesday night to Hindley parents and took their questions. One topic of particular interest to parents was overcrowding. "The board policy is to be realistic and identify how we can be effective and fiscally responsible. We're conscious of planning how much space we need, based on enrollment reports," Falcone said. He added that the school administration decides by Aug. 1 how much space it will need and plans accordingly. "The last thing we want to do is redistrict. Kids develop relationships wit…
Students Set To Inherit The Wind Students Set To Inherit The Wind Students Set To Inherit The Wind
Students Set To Inherit The Wind The battle between science and religion will play out on Darien High School's stage this weekend when Theatre 308 performs "Inherit the Wind." The play depicts the famous Scopes Monkey Trial of 1925, although director Abby Warren has updated the play to take place in the modern day. "I've changed some of the roles from men to women. Partly it's because of what came out of auditions, and it's partly because it's more relevant to today to have women attorneys," she said. The students have been hard at work since the end of September, rehearsing every day after school. They have taken on a lot…
Zulu Investigation Leads to Arrest Zulu Investigation Leads to Arrest Zulu Investigation Leads to Arrest
Zulu Investigation Leads to Arrest Darien's K-9 Zulu was called to a domestic violence incident Sunday in which Sarah Lutkins, 19, was arrested on domestic violence and drug charges. Police were called to Lutkins' house at 7:20 a.m. after verbal arguments with family members led to physical confrontations. One family member had a small cut on his head, and another had bite marks on both her arms. When police were interviewing Lutkins in her bedroom, they noticed a baggie of marijuana sitting in plain sight, as well as two pipes with residue in them. Zulu was brought in and found another glass pipe with residue under the bed.…

Police, Kids Step Up To Help The Needy Darien police officers Dan Skoumbros and T.J. Whyte delivered more than 200 winter coats to Person-to-Person on Tuesday morning. The coats were collected as part of the Darien Police Association's coat drive last week, and Skoumbros said he ended up with more coats than expected. "I was surprised. The public really came in strong," he said. "We had a good amount that were coming in all week." The coats were taken into the Person-to-Person's Clothing Center, a free "store" where people can come in and "shop" for shoes, clothing, linens and household goods. Kathleen Bordelon, director of …

Publisher Finds Switch to Insurance Easy Most people don't completely change career paths after years in one business, but that's exactly what Greg Reilly did when he switched from publishing and journalism to insurance. Though most people would find that transition jarring, Reilly has found that his new job at Daigle & Travers Insurance is a perfect fit. Reilly has spent most of his career in the journalism trade as editor and publisher at Times Mirror Magazines' Skiing Trade News and sales manager at the New York Times Magazine Group's Snow Country magazine before editing his own local publication, Local Matters.
