Darien Mom Juggles Navy and Home Many people consider being a mother a full-time job, but Sueann Schorr manages to find time to serve her country when she isn't raising her kids. Schorr, a commander in the U.S. Navy Reserve, spends time forecasting weather for the Navy. "I'm a stay-at-home mom, so it's a great opportunity to exercise my brain, look at the weather, and talk to grownups," said Schorr, who said that women make up about 20 percent of the Navy personnel. She said that she has changed during her time in the military. "I think I've really grown in my ability to speak up for myself," Schorr said. "I'm in a leader…

VFW Chief Serves his Fellow Vets Phil Kraft saw how terribly some people treated his fellow veterans when he returned from Vietnam. As post commander of the Darien Veterans of Foreign Wars and executive director of the National Veterans Service Fund, Kraft works to make sure that veterans no longer receive that kind of treatment. "When we came home, people didn't like us. They spit on us, called us names," he said. "Vietnam vets are entirely responsible for the current behavior toward veterans. We were a generation of veterans who do not ever want another generation treated the way we were." Kraft became involved in the VF…

Allen O'Neill Residents Upset The people who live on Allen O'Neill Drive aren't happy with the RTM's vote last week abandoning the road to the Darien Housing Agency. Residents like Leonard Gerardi, who has lived there since he was in first grade, say the community is being knocked down to make way for an affordable housing condominium complex. "This was an ideal happy little community," says Gerardi, who graduated from high school last year. "Now the place I call home is being knocked down for ... I don't even know what." The feeling of not knowing was echoed by Susan Geddes, head of the neighborhood association. "They'…
