HOPE Floats On Tilley Pond HOPE Floats On Tilley Pond HOPE Floats On Tilley Pond
Hope Floats On Tilley Pond Dozens of toy boats dotted Tilley Pond on Saturday as part of HOPE Floats, an event to raise money for the Center for Hope in Darien, an organization that offers counseling to people dealing with emotional issues. Families were invited to buy little boat kits, assemble them and sail them on the pond. Kids like Tyler Beery were excited to decorate and launch boats of their own. "I call it Fighter Jet because it has stripes," he said, beaming with joy. Tyler's father, Bill, was enthusiastic also. "I think it's great," he said. "They have pizza, music, food. It's everything a kid could want, a…
Darien Author Believes God Speaks to us Darien Author Believes God Speaks to us Darien Author Believes God Speaks to us
Darien Author Believes God Speaks to us Darien resident Ted Sanborn once believed that God communicated with people only in the Bible, not in the real world. But his view changed, which inspired him to write, "What's That Noise? Listening For God in a Busy World." The book tracks his personal experiences, as well as stories of others who believe God speaks to us in our everyday lives. "There are messages from God that we don't always receive because of all the noise and activity in our lives," he said. "It's like a radio: We just have to tune in and turn the volume up." Sanborn will be at Barrett Bookstore in Darien, 314 Heights …

Shoppers Help Mothers in Need Whole Foods customers can help mothers in need while they shop Saturday by donating baby supplies to Baby Basics, a program run by Person-to-Person. Volunteers Meredith Carre and Elena Whidden were outside the store Friday and will collect again Saturday morning. All donated materials will be assembled in layettes and given to mothers at Stamford and Norwalk hospitals. Carre and Whidden said people are usually generous about donating newborn essentials. "People have been very good about grabbing a bag of diapers and dropping it off on their way out," Whidden said. "Baby Basics puts some mone…

Hindley Students Dive Into Reading The theme was "Dive into Reading" at Hindley Elementary's annual Book Fair Family Night, and the library and cafeteria were decorated accordingly with fish and other aquatic items. But the main focus was on books, and kids like Sam Gleason were browsing the large selection for sale in the library, picking out their favorite reads. "I like adventure, mystery, action, and fun books," Sam said. "I have to say my favorite is the 'Seeker' series. I would recommend that to high readers in third grade, or just regular readers in fourth grade." Other activities were offered in addition to the books…

Low-Cost Housing Builder to Press On Low-Cost Housing Builder to Press On Low-Cost Housing Builder to Press On
Low-Cost Housing Builder to Press On Even though Darien has won a moratorium on affordable housing, Christ Stefanoni will continue to develop affordable senior housing. He and his wife, Margaret, petitioned against Darien's moratorium application, arguing that the town was exaggerating the number of its affordable housing-unit points. "It was a pleasure for me to spend much of 2010 helping the town to clarify how moratorium points are tallied. However, a moratorium has no effect on me as I have 62 units in the pipeline," Stefanoni said, referring to three senior housing developments that the Stefanonis have applied to build. …

Candidates Unite at Board of Ed Debate Though it was technically a debate, there did not seem to be much disagreement between Board of Education members James Plutte and Clara Sartori when they took to the stage Tuesday night at Candidates' Night hosted by the League of Women Voters of Darien. Though they are both running unopposed for re-election, they fielded questions submitted by audience members about such issues as cutting the school budget and teaching foreign languages in elementary school. "It's important that any cutbacks we make not involve classroom instruction and individual learning," Sartori said. She explained som…

Couple Loses $2,100 in Chimney Scam A Darien couple reported being scammed out of $2,100 Oct. 13 by a company calling itself All-Purpose Chimney Care. The couple received a call from the company, saying they needed to have their chimney inspected. They agreed and ended up paying for the installation of chimney liner. The couple reported that the so-called inspectors arrived at their house in a white van with New York license plates and used an address that was a P.O. Box in Middle Island, N.Y. Darien police said they have seen this type of scam before and are investigating the quality of the work. They advise residents to be wa…
Darien Wins Housing Moratorium Darien Wins Housing Moratorium Darien Wins Housing Moratorium
Darien Wins Housing Moratorium Darien received a four-year moratorium from the state Tuesday which prevents developers from using Connecticut General Statute 8-30G to overstep local zoning boards in order to build affordable housing. First Selectman David Campbell celebrated the moratorium. "The moratorium is a short term solution to the bigger issue of creating an affordable housing plan appropriate for Darien," he said in a statement. "I am a supporter of affordable housing in Darien, but it must be done in a thoughtful way that does not devalue the properties of neighboring home owners." The statute allows developer…

Seniors Get the Skinny on Longevity Darien seniors got a lot of advice on keeping healthy when cardiologist Dr. Edward H. Schuster presented his talk "How To Live To Be 100" at the Darien Community Association on Tuesday. The talk was sponsored by Aging in Place, and featured tips on staying active, taking vitamins and maintaining a healthy diet. "You really want to be proactive, take care of yourself so you don't get sick," Schuster said. "One thing I've been emphasizing is balance training for seniors. You really want to be careful. More of my patients every year die of falls than of heart attacks or cancer." Aging in Pla…
