Monster Artwork Lurks in Darien High A Monster Parade haunted the hallways of Darien High on Wednesday as artwork by students from all over the town's school district went on display. Students like Mary Elliott were invited to take part with the assignment of creating a realistic depiction of a monster while incorporating elements from nature. "I really like Tim Burton," Elliott, a junior at DHS, said of the inspiration for her drawing. "We had to put it in a background, and I chose 'The Imagination.' I also chose to do an octopus kind of thing, because I really like the sleekness of the tentacles." Darien High art teacher Jac…

Shuffle Plan Runs Into Objections The proposal to move Darien's Senior Center and Board of Education offices met with objections about crowding and concern that alternatives have not been considered. First Selectman David Campbell laid out details of the plan at the Representative Town Meeting Monday, but Darien resident Karen Doying wasn't swayed. "As I age, I want to have nice facilities. I feel it's a mistake to put the Senior Center here with the crowded conditions of the whole community," she said, referring to the plan to turn the current school board site into a combination Senior Center and Community Center. "There's…

Darien Postpones Dog Leash Rules Darien dog owners do not have to worry about tying up their dogs quite yet. The Representative Town Meeting voted Monday night to table a proposed ordinance that would require dog owners to keep their pets on a leash in all public places. "It's absolutely ridiculous," dog owner Maryann Freeman said of the proposed ordinance. She said she often brings her dog Holly to Cherry Lawn Park in the morning and lets her run around. "Most dogs that come here are very nice, and the owners are very conscientious of the dogs and their behavior." At the RTM meeting, there was argument over the wording of…

Author Shares Messages From 9/11 Before Bonnie McEneaney lost her husband, Eamon, on Sept. 11, she was skeptical about communicating with people who have passed on. But after her experiences following 9/11, and from talking with people who have gone through similar ordeals, her opinions began to change. The result is a book called "Messages," and on Tuesday she spoke to the Darien Community Association and shared her thoughts on premonition, signs and spirituality. Darien Abandons Allen O'Neill Drive The Darien Representative Town Meeting voted Monday night to abandon Allen O'Neill Drive as a public road and annex the property to the Darien Housing Authority for development as a private driveway for a new affordable housing complex. The issue faced tense debate, with some, including Finance and Budget chair Bruce Orr, saying the move to end all of the town's claims on the road was in Darien's best interest. Others, including Chris Noe from District II, said the plan was not specific enough. "There are scores of private roads in Darien that are maintained by the residents with no cost to…
