Greenwich Wrestlers Take 2nd in Fciac Danbury was the odds-on favorite entering the finals of Saturday's Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference wrestling championships, but the race for second figured to be close. With four finalists and two champions, Greenwich edged Fairfield Warde and Trumbull to grab the runner-up prize at the meet at New Canaan High School. "The kids did an unbelievable job,'' Greenwich coach George Albano said. "To place 10 guys, it's a credit to how hard they've been working." Johnny D'Elia won the 112-pound championship with a 3-1 overtime decision. Ben Ceci won the 189-pound title with …
Staples' 6-Foot Center Felman Stands Tall Staples' 6-Foot Center Felman Stands Tall Staples' 6-Foot Center Felman Stands Tall
Staples' 6-Foot Center Felman Stands Tall Jake Felman of Staples boys basketball team is undersized for a center. "I'm six feet, on a good day,'' the senior said after the Wreckers' 51-50 win over Stamford on Tuesday. While Felman is shorter than just about every center he goes up against -- he gave away five inches to Stamford's Luis Briddter -- he comes up big in a lot of other areas. Like determination, intensity and intelligence. "He is,'' says coach Colin Devine, "the heart of our team." Tuesday's game was reflective of Felman's season for the Wreckers. He scored a team-high 12 points, helped hold Stamford to one if its lowe…

Wilton Girls Hockey Celebrates Seniors The Wilton High School girls hockey team held its Senior Night ceremonies Wednesday night at Wintergarden Ice Rink in Ridgefield. Two years ago, Lara Schnitzler, Stephanie Lash, Christie Huidekoper, Erica DiLello and Emily Tucker were part of the first girls ice hockey team at Wilton. Sabrina Bell, the sixth senior honored before Wednesday's 5-2 loss to New Canaan, joined the team last year. The girls have endured growing pains. Wilton's first team went 3-10, and mo…

Wrestlers Take Aim at League Titles Wrestlers Take Aim at League Titles Wrestlers Take Aim at League Titles
Wrestlers Take Aim at League Titles Fairfield Warde’s wrestling team ended Danbury’s 23-year run in the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference championship meet last year. As the teams prepare for this year’s meet at New Canaan High School, the question everybody’s asking is this: Can the Mustangs do it again? The meet begins Friday at 4:30 p.m., with the first two rounds. The semifinals will be held Saturday at 10 a.m., and the finals begin at 4 p.m. Greenwich will also have a lot to say about which team emerges with the league title at the end of the day Saturday. Danbury, the state’s second-ranked team, def…

Weston Boys Finish 4th in Class S Track Weston High boys track coach Matt Medve knew his team faced an uphill climb as it tried to win its fourth Class S title in five years at Thursday's championship meet at the New Haven Athletic Center. "We had some solid relays." Stephen Vento led Weston's individual performances with a victory in the 3,200 and a third in the 1,000. Weston also won the 4 x 800 with Noah Krassin, Sam Rueben, Paul Philpott and David Stank…
New Canaan Girls Ice Wilton New Canaan Girls Ice Wilton New Canaan Girls Ice Wilton
New Canaan Girls Ice Wilton New Canaan's girls hockey team needed a spark in the third period to shake off pesky Wilton in Wednesday's game at the Wintergarden Ice Rink in Ridgefield. It took a mere 20 seconds for Jana Persky to provide it. Persky's goal with 14:40 remaining in the game gave the Rams a 3-1 lead, and they went on to defeat the Warriors, 5-2. The Rams improved to 12-1 overall and 8-0 in the league. With three league games remaining, the Rams have virtually locked up the top seed for the league playoffs. Olivia Hompe scored three goals for the Rams, and line mate Persky netted the other two. Lara Schni…

Area Stars Meet on College Court Several basketball stars from Stamford and Norwalk squared off against each other on opposite sides Wednesday night as Quinnipiac edged Sacred Heart University, 59-54, in a Northeast Conference men's basketball game at Quinnipiac. Freshmen Chris Evans (of Stamford High) and Evan Kelley (of Norwalk) played 15 minutes each for the losing Pioneers.
