Miss Porter's Stops GFA's Girls Win Streak Miss Porter's School of Farmington took an early 9-0 lead and went on to defeat Greens Farms Academy, 51-35, in a non-league girls basketball game Wednesday in Westport. The Dragons are tied with Hamden Hall atop the Fairchester Athletic Association with a 6-1 league mark. Jenna Pittleman added 10 and Alexa Sullivan scored seven for GFA. Wilton Hangs Tough in Loss to New Canaan Wilton High's girls hockey team, playing in front of a Senior Night crowd, trailed powerful New Canaan High by just one goal entering the third period of Wednesday night's game at the Wintergarden Ice Rink in Ridgefield. The Rams' Jana Persky quickly dashed the Warriors' upset hopes. She scored 20 seconds into the third period, and Olivia Hompe scored three goals, two in the final period, as the Rams turned back the Warriors, 5-2. "That was our game plan,'' Wilton coach Kerry Leonard said. "We wanted to keep it close. If we get the opportunity, let's capitalize on it." Lara Schnitzler scor…

Darien Teen Returns From Skateboarding Injuries The one thing Chris Chiamulera wanted to do more than anything after an August skateboarding accident was to get back on the basketball court. The 14-year-old Darien High School freshman got his wish last Sunday. Chiamulera, who suffered serious injuries in the accident last August, returned to the court in the Darien YMCA's house basketball league. He played travel basketball for the under-14 Darien travel team last year. "I loved the whole feeling of being out there,'' said Chris, who has been playing since third grade. "I'm not sure how to describe it. I love how it's quick-paced." Chia…

The undefeated 145-pound senior, who wrestles Wednesday night at Fairfield Warde, enters that match with 98 career victories. Only three other Rams have won more than 100 matches. Khzouz is 25-0 on the season and 98-23 entering the match against Warde. "I definitely did not see this,'' said Brian, who has been a mainstay in the Rams' lineup since freshman year. "It wasn't until we started counting wins that I thought I might have a shot." The 100-win elite at New Canaan inc…

Weston Teen Plunged Right In for Charity Weston Teen Plunged Right In for Charity Weston Teen Plunged Right In for Charity
Weston Teen Plunged Right In for Charity Shivering with only swim trunks on in 30-degree weather, I stood on the chilly beach in the icy wind right next to the freezing Long Island Sound. Eleven of my Weston High School soccer teammates, including my coach, were lined up beside me on either side, waiting for the signal to enter the frigid water. After a few moments, the air horn sounded, giving us our cue. After one final breath, I braced myself and ran with my teammates and 60 other participants into the Long Island Sound to cheers from the parents and friends. Oh, don't worry. I had a reason for doing this. I promise! For the …

Babe Ruth Players Spring Into Action If you walk around Stamford High School on Sunday mornings in the winter, you can see the seeds planted for the future success of Stamford's Babe Ruth team. Each week, young ballplayers ages 12-17 pitch, run, throw, hit, field and slide – yes, slide – under the guidance of some of the league's best baseball minds. The league has a long history of success, including five regional championships in the past six years. Last year's 15-year-old team advanced to the World Series in Monticello, Ark. Watching the players undergo their own version of spring training, it's no secret why Stamford's team…

Jake Felman scored 12 points and the Wreckers withstood four cracks at a potential game-winning basket by Stamford in the final frantic seconds to defeat the Black Knights, 51-50. Staples improved to 12-4 overall and 11-3 in the league while Stamford fell to 10-5 and 9-4. "This game was huge,'' Felman said. "It was for seeding. More importantly, it's for…
Stamford Falls Short Against Staples Stamford Falls Short Against Staples Stamford Falls Short Against Staples
Stamford Falls Short Against Staples Stamford High had four shots at a potential game-winning basket in the final seconds of Tuesday's Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference game against Staples. Most of them were quality looks from close range, and the ball did everything but drop through the net for the Black Knights. The Wreckers escaped with a 51-50 victory, holding on in a tight game that saw four lead changes in the final period of a hard-fought, scrappy contest between two teams that appear to be locks to make the league playoffs. Staples (12-4 overall, 11-3 FCIAC) controlled the first half as Stamford c…
