Boat Club Rowers Make Top College Picks Some parents wonder whether high school students can combine academic and athletic success, but the Norwalk-based Connecticut Boat Club provides a compelling conclusion. Ten girls from the club, which won three gold medals at last year's U.S. Junior Nationals, have firmed up college commitments. They will be competing for some of the nation's finest rowing programs at some of the country's most prestigious academic schools. The list of CBC rowers committed to colleges include Southport's Lucy Grinalds at Harvard; Fairfield's Maddie Stearns at the University of California-Berkley; Darien's Wh…

Klein Pulls Away Early in Buildup Opener Matt Klein pulled away from the pack about a 1 ½ miles into Sunday's Boston Buildup 10-kilometer race in Norwalk. The 16-year-old from Trumbull never looked back until he crossed the finish line, winning the race in 33:39 and beating the closest competitor by 80 seconds. "I really wasn't sure about the competition,'' said Klein, a junior at the Hopkins School in New Haven. “I wasn't sure who would show up." Klein beat a field of 361 finishers in the largest race ever for the Buildup. Sunday's run kicked off the 33rd edition of the series, which consists of four races at progressively long…

Greens Farms Packs The House for Charity Greens Farms Packs The House for Charity Greens Farms Packs The House for Charity
Greens Farms Packs The House for Charity The nearly 500 fans that attended Greens Farms Academy's Pack The House night for Saturday's game against Brunswick also stuffed the cash box. The fans raised more than $1,600 for Partners In Health, a Boston-based organization that delivers high-quality medical care in 12 countries. And even more contributions will be collected from donor pledges based on the number of people who attended the basketball game. "We're so grateful for the turnout,'' said Westport senior Alexandra Damianos, president of the school's Community Service Board. "We didn't know what to expect, and it was fantastic."…
Brunswick Falls to Greens Farms Brunswick Falls to Greens Farms Brunswick Falls to Greens Farms
Brunswick Falls to Greens Farms Greens Farms Academy had never beaten Brunswick in boys basketball before this season. Now, the Dragons have done it twice in a month. Saturday's 36-33 victory was ugly from start to finish, but GFA survived to improve to 4-3. Sean Obi scored 18 points and grabbed 24 rebounds to lead the Dragons. "We had a lot of opportunities," Brunswick's Billy Murphy said. "You're going to off-shooting nights. That shouldn't be an excuse for losing." Donqutae Robinson scored 11 points to pace the Bruins, while Alex Gatinella added nine. Murphy scored six as the Bruins built leads in each half only to see…

Greens Farms Turns Back Brunswick Greens Farms Academy had never beaten Brunswick in boys basketball before this season. Now, the Dragons have done it twice in a month. Saturday's 36-33 victory was ugly from start to finish, but GFA survived to improve to 4-3. Sean Obi scored 18 points and grabbed 24 rebounds to lead the Dragons. "I told them before the game we were going to be in for a fight,'' first-year coach Doug Scott said. "I knew it was going to be a defensive battle." The Dragons struggled to hit from the perimeter all game. The biggest score, however, may have been Christian Papic's three-pointer with 5:14 left in …

Runners Brace for the Boston Buildup The only predictable thing about the annual Boston Buildup running series is that the weather will be unpredictable. The 33rd edition of the four-race sequence begins Sunday at 10 a.m. with a 10-kilometer race at Brien McMahon High School. The races include a 15K, 20K and 25K at various sites in Fairfield County. The series is especially popular with runners who are training for the Boston Marathon in April. A record field is expected for Sunday’s race, said race director Jim Gerweck, based on the number of pre-registered runners. Runners can register through the clubct.org website, at Runn…
