New Canaan Girl Glides With Skating Team Most figure skating fans think of the sport as something for individual athletes or perhaps in pairs. New Canaan's Ashley Mulhern will tell you differently. As a member of the Skyliners synchronized skating team, she enjoys working with a unit. "Everything we do is challenging,'' says the New Canaan High School senior. "The accomplishments and what we achieve are amazing." Mulhern's team will skate in perhaps its most important competition of the season this week. The Skyliners are a tri-state team that includes girls from Fairfield County, Westchester County in New York and New Jersey. The…

Big Game for Redd, Fortt Could be Paterno's Last Silas Redd and Khairi Fortt are preparing for the final football game of their freshman season at Penn State. It could also be the final game for legendary coach Joe Paterno. Redd, a Norwalk native who played at King, and Fortt, who played at Stamford High, will be with the Nittany Lions when they play Florida Saturday in the Outback Bowl. The conversation surrounding the game, however, centers on Paterno's future. There has been rampant speculation that the 84-year-old coach will retire after the game. Young Players Swing Away at Valentine Camp Despite the snow and cold temperatures that have gripped the area, young ballplayers were hard at work, hitting, throwing and fielding at the Bobby Valentine Sports Academy in Stamford. Frank Ramppen, who coached with the former Mets manager in Japan, and the staff at the academy worked with young players on a variety of baseball skills during the holiday break. "They get a lot out of it,'' says Ramppen, who has worked with Valentine for 30 years. "They get some instruction, and they get some fun." The camp is part of the instructional programs offered at the Bobby V Academy. Though the fo…
