Teen Athlete Settles in With CBC Crew Olivia Taylor tossed the options around in her mind for months. Most girls would have given anything to be the captain of the Darien High School volleyball team after three years on varsity. When she learned Greenwich Education and Prep offered an internship opportunity in special education, however, Olivia's conflict began. "It was a hard decision,'' she says, "because I was in love with the volleyball team." She made the choice that would benefit her educational experience and left Darien High for the Greenwich private school. "I love my high school coach" Laurie LaRusso, Olivia says. "She…
Wrestling Keeps a Hold on Battinelli Wrestling Keeps a Hold on Battinelli Wrestling Keeps a Hold on Battinelli
Wrestling Keeps a Hold on Battinelli Mike Battinelli's sons have aged out of the Stamford Junior Wrestling program, so there's no reason for him to still be rolling on the mats, teaching moves and motivating children. But Battinelli, a 51-year-old firefighter who was a wrestling star at Stamford High in the 1970s, wouldn't dream of stopping. "I enjoy this more than coaching the high school kids,'' says Mike, a volunteer assistant for the Stamford High School team. "The kids get so much out of it. You see [them] develop from little kids to eighth-graders, and you can see them improve and grow." Battinelli has been involved in t…

2 Weston Boys Ready to Run at Open For the first time in six years, Weston High School will not have its full team at Friday's State Open cross country championships at Manchester's Wickham Park. Instead, the Trojans will send two runners, senior Stephen Vento and sophomore David Stankiewicz. Weston's reign as the two-time Class SS champion ended last Saturday when Canton captured the team championship. The Trojans, beset by injuries and illness much of the year, finished eighth. The team's bad luck continued even in the state meet as one runner dropped out during the race with an injury. Vento led the Trojans with an 11th p…

Lesch's Goal Lifts Staples to Title Staples High School won its third straight Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference boys soccer championship Wednesday night at Norwalk High School. Not surprisingly, Brendan Lesch played a key part in the win. Lesch, a senior midfielder headed for the University of Notre Dame, scored the game-winning goal in the 53rd minute to snap a 1-1 tie against Fairfield Warde. It was Lesch's third goal of the playoffs and his second game-winner. "I've been watching Brendan for four years,'' Staples head coach Dan Woog said. "Every game he does something that surprises and amazes you. He p…

Warde Falls Short in Soccer Final Fairfield Warde's boys soccer team pressed the attack in the final minutes of Wednesday's Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference championship game against Staples. Trailing by a goal, the fourth-seeded Mustangs threw everything they had at the second-seeded Wreckers. Warde fell short, 2-1, yet there were no complaints from coach Justin Ottavio. "We displayed the character that we have,'' Ottavio said. "After Staples scored that goal, we could've packed it in. We deal with adversity real well." The championship lived up to expectations. Staples (16-2-1), which won its third str…
