Rowing Sisters' Summer Is Heavy Medal Lucy and Rosie Grinalds might have the most interesting "How I Spent My Summer" report to write when they return to Fairfield Ludlowe High School next week. Rosie, a junior, won a silver medal in the women's 8. They made the team after the U.S. Junior Rowing Championships in June. Both rowed on the Connecticut Boat Club wom…
Freed Finds Gold in Masters Rowing Freed Finds Gold in Masters Rowing Freed Finds Gold in Masters Rowing
Freed Finds Gold in Masters Rowing Yan Vengerovskiy frequently reminds Leslie Freed of what she said when she began rowing six years ago. "I told him I'm just a recreational rower,'' Leslie says, referring to one her coaches at Norwalk's Maritime Rowing Club. "I don't want to race." Freed's objective has changed. At the USRowing Masters Nationals earlier this month in New Jersey, the 64-year-old Freed won three gold medals, a silver and a bronze. The Stamford woman rows every day of the week and competes in all levels of racing. "It surprised me that I've become so passionate about it,'' Leslie says. "I never had a passion be…

Fairfield Family Rallies to Net Title Trish and Danny Pavoni didn't like this one bit. They lost in the Pilot Pen Tennis Family Classic finals when Danny was 11 without winning a game, and in Thursday's final of the Mother and Son 14-year-old division they dropped the first set 6-0 to Stamford's Louise and Daniel Soifer. "We didn't want to have déjà vu," Trish said. Trish and Danny fought back this time. They rallied to win, 0-6, 6-4, 10-7 to capture the championship. (The third set is a 10-point tiebreaker, and the team must win by two.) The Pavonis rallied after losing the first eight games to defeat the two-time defending cha…

Hussey Hustles Into Track's Fast Lane Kelley Hussey moves her feet fast. But she is now competing in an environment that is radically different than the one in which she excelled just a few years ago. Kelley, who is entering her senior year at Staples High School, made huge strides this summer as a sprinter with the Connecticut Elite track and field team. Until a few years ago, Hussey's nimble footwork landed her in international Irish Step Dancing competitions in Ireland and Northern Ireland. Bill and Tony's Aims to Three-Peat Bill & Tony's Power Club is ready to try for a three-peat in the Norwalk Softball Wood Bat League. The two-time defending champions took the first step toward a third straight title Wednesday night with a 6-1 victory over Lajoie's Auto Parts in the first round of the league playoffs.
