Community Comes Out for Christine's Run Community Comes Out for Christine's Run Community Comes Out for Christine's Run
Community Comes Out for Christine's Run At times during Sunday's Christine's Run It While You Can in Fairfield, it was difficult to discern whether it was a road race or a community celebration. It was a little of both, as parents ran with their children, participants jumped into Long Island Sound and serious runners kept focused on their primary objectives. There was, in short, something for everybody. The inaugural race was in memory of Christine Morandi, the former aquatics director at the Bridgeport YMCA who died last year. She was also a competitive runner. "It's a testament to a great, great lady,'' says Nancy Burke, who ass…

Celebration Amazes Whittingham Creator Zarek Mena of Norwalk danced excitedly as cancer survivors swayed to the sounds of Queen's "We Are The Champions" played by DNR at Saturday's Whittingham Cancer Center Annual Benefit Walk/Run. Mena had good reason to proud. She started the event seven years ago, and seeing the huge gathering at Calf Pasture Beach was inspiring. "It's amazing how big it has gotten," Mena says. "The first year we got about 500 people. We didn't even have enough t-shirts. It just gets bigger every year." She celebrated the event with her sister, Ivannia, who helped her during her fight with cancer. Co-chairmen…

Coleman Wins Whittingham 5K Jason Coleman came to Whittingham Cancer Center's Annual Benefit Walk/Run to encourage his wife, Maria, and get her back into running. He ended up walking away with the winner's hardware. Coleman, 32, won the 5-kilometer race in 18:49. He beat Adam Rosengarten of Norwalk to the finish line by six seconds. Brittany Szabo of Weston won the women's race in 20:02. Coleman said the race was his first 5K of the year. He usually runs 10ks, but enjoyed the fast, flat course that started at Calf Pasture Beach. "It was fast and windy,'' Coleman said. "The wind slowed me down. It was constant resistan…
Lemonade Stand Helps Kids Lemonade Stand Helps Kids Lemonade Stand Helps Kids
Lemonade Stand Helps Kids A sun-splashed, breezy warm May day proved the perfect opportunity for a lemonade stand in front of Coleytown Elementary School for four children. Jackie Forget, 9, Clayton Crouch, 10, Margaux Forget, 7 and Maddy Crouch, 8, sold lemonade, cookies, and iced tea. They waved big signs to passing motorists, encouraging them to stop and sample their goods. The children collected money for Smile Train, an international charity that provides cleft lip and cleft palate surgery to children in need. Maddy Crouch, who attends Coleytown with Clayton, said she got the idea to organize a stand and donate …

Big Crowd Walks/Runs for Whittingham A large crowd walked or ran Saturday in the seventh annual Whittingham Cancer Center's annual benefit at Calf Pasture Beach in Norwalk. Co-chairman Holly and Jeff Pivor hoped to have nearly 2,500 people attend the event. Proceeds support cancer services at Norwalk Hospital and improve the lives of patients and their families. On a beautiful, breezy spring day, an emotional and lively crowd participated in the 5k run and 3k walk, with donations coming in throughout the day.
