Junior Varsity Winners Crowned in Ugolyn Tourney WILTON, Conn. – Our Lady of Fatima girls and St. Lawrence boys won the junior varsity divisions of the Tyler Ugolyn Basketball Tournament. The tournament was played at Our Lady of Fatima in Wilton. The hosts defeated All Saints of Norwalk in the girls championship game. St. Lawrence of Shelton defeated Trinity Catholic Middle School of Stamford in the boys final. All-Tournament players from the girls teams included Gabriella Joseph and Kassandra Scott, from All Saints and Elle Fair, Jessica Highland, and Caroline Sweeny, from Our Lady of Fatima. Westhill Girls Shine at State Track Meet STAMFORD, Conn. – Stamford's Westhill runners recorded several impressive performances Thursday at the Class LL indoor track and field championships at the Floyd Little Athletic Center in New Haven. The Viking girls finished tied for 12th with 10 points, and several athletes ran well but did not finish among the top six to earn points. The Vikings had three runners in the top 13 in the 1,000. Greenwich Teams Take Second in State Track GREENWICH, Conn. – Greenwich High School’s girls and boys teams finished second Thursday in the Class LL indoor track and field championships at the Floyd Little Athletic Center in New Haven. Both teams had multiple champions. The girls finished with 74 points, trailing only Glastonbury, which had 91. Staples’ boys won the team title with 80.5, while the Cardinals took second with 55. New Course, Chilly Temps on Tap for Fairfield Race FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. – Runners in the Boston Buildup Series will find a new course and frigid conditions for Sunday’s third leg of the four-race series: a 20-kilometer event in Fairfield. The race begins at 9:15 a.m. at Tomlinson Middle School in Fairfield. The site is a new venue for the venerable series, which is in its 34th year. Staples Boys Win Class LL Track Crown WESTPORT, Conn. – The Staples High boys track and field team did a little bit of everything en route to the Class LL indoor track and field championship Thursday night at the Floyd Little Athletic Center in New Haven. The Wreckers picked up points in relays, field events, sprints and distance events in winning their first Class LL title. The Wreckers won the Class L championship in 2008. Norwalk, McMahon Runners Win Class LL Titles NORWALK, Conn. – Norwalk’s Adam Robertino and Brien McMahon’s Shelly Lindo won races Thursday night at the Class LL indoor track and field championships at the Floyd Little Athletic Center in New Haven. Robertino, a senior, blew away the field to win the 55-meter hurdles. He blazed through the race in 7.67, ahead of Kodjo Erasmus of Manchester, who ran 7.93. Norwalk’s Djess Jacques finished fourth at 8.32. Lindo won the 55 dash in the girls race, running 7.12. She was just 0.01 off the Class LL record of 7.13 set by Danbury’s Shelby Walton in 2008. Darien 6th-Grade Basketball Team Faces Big Weekend DARIEN, Conn. – The Darien YMCA Blue sixth-grade boys basketball team will get a rare stiff test this weekend in consecutive games in the Fairfield County Basketball League. Darien, 26-2, meets Mount Vernon, N.Y., at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Middlesex Middle School in Darien. All-Stars Named at Wilton Youth Basketball Tourney WILTON, Conn. – Players in the Tyler Ugolyn basketball tournament were named to the All-Star team in the boys and girls varsity divisions in the event hosted by Our Lady of Fatima School in Wilton. This was the first year players were chosen All-Stars for the tournament, which is named after an alumnus of the school. The players were divided into two teams. Wilton Woman Paces Age Group in New York Race WILTON, Conn. – Wilton runner Elizabeth Craig won her age group Sunday in the New York Road Runners Gridiron Classic in Central Park. Craig completed the 4-mile distance in 30:46 to win the women’s 55-59 division and outpace the second-place finisher by over a minute. Craig was one of several members of the Waveny Running Club to participate in the race, which featured 6,064 runners. Dorothy Williams and Peggy Flood, who also run out of Waveny, also finished in the top 10 in their age groups, as did Darien’s Lissa Short.
