Young Ballplayers Warm Up to Opening Day Young Ballplayers Warm Up to Opening Day Young Ballplayers Warm Up to Opening Day
Young Ballplayers Warm Up to Opening Day A cloudy Saturday morning did not cool the warmth of Norwalk Little League's opening ceremonies in Norwalk. Players, parents and coaches gathered at Broad River Field to take part in the event. Though this event has been a staple in Norwalk for some time, the message remained the same: Get involved, lighten up and have fun. Having fun was not a problem. Coaches could be seen helping players break down the mechanics of a good swing, classmates now on rival teams chatted and joked around, and proud parents cheered their sons and daughters. The constant in all the baseball faire were smiles. M…

Barlow Boys Lacrosse Whips Weston Joel Barlow High School boys lacrosse coach John Distler wanted his team get off to a quick start in Monday's South-West Conference matchup against neighboring Weston. The Falcons did, and it was the difference in the game. Barlow (9-0) built a 5-1 lead at halftime and went on to defeat the Trojans, 8-3, on Monday in Redding. Wyatt Tompkins paced Barlow with three goals and two assists. Robbie Palazzo scored two goals, while Drew Zangrillo, Conner Regan and Nolan Stauffer added single goals. "We wanted to get up on them and make them play catch up,'' Distler said. "They had a lot of young g…

Staples Baseball Stunned by New Canaan Staples Baseball Stunned by New Canaan Staples Baseball Stunned by New Canaan
Staples Baseball Stunned by New Canaan With a 4-1 lead and undefeated pitcher Rob Gau on the mound, some people might have thought the Staples High School baseball game Friday afternoon was over. Some of those people, to the chagrin of Wreckers’ coach Jack McFarland, were wearing uniforms for his team. New Canaan twice stormed back from behind to defeat the Wreckers, 8-7, in a slugfest at Staples. Julian Clarke took the loss in relief of Gau, who surrendered five runs before getting pulled in the fifth. “He just didn’t have his command today,’’ McFarland said. Staples (9-2, 8-2) suffered its second straight loss. After the Ram…
