On Feb. 28, 2001, Colon was driving a 1996 Honda Civic at a high rate of speed on Christopher Columbus Drive near Merseles Street in Jersey City when he struck a guard rail, Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez said. His passenger, 30-year-old Jesus Gonzalez, was pronounced dead at the scene, Suarez said. Colon had pleaded guilty to first-degree death by auto for driving while intoxicated in April, Suarez said.
