Firefighters Extinguish Fire In South Norwalk That Started In Microwave NORWALK, Conn. -- Norwalk firefighters quickly knocked down a fire that started in a microwave of a South Main Street apartment Wednesday. The Norwalk Fire Department received a report of smoke and possibly fire coming from the apartment building at the corner of South Main Street and Haviland Street, according to Deputy Fire Chief Stephen Shay. Ely Ave. Blocked, Power Outages Reported After Pole Fire In Norwalk Updated 11:45 a.m.: Connecticut Light & Power crews are working to restore power in Norwalk after a broken utility pole caused outages for more than 1,000 customers. Customers in the area of Ely Avenue should start seeing power restoration by about noon, CL&P spokesman Frank Poirot said. Full restoration to the area is expected at about 1 p.m., he said. As of 11:45 a.m. there were 1,045 customers without power, representing 3 percent of all CL&P customers in Norwalk. Norwalk Closes Beaches To Swimmers Tuesday NORWALK, Conn. -- Norwalk's beaches are closed for swimming Tuesday due to the weather conditions. Swimming is prohibited at both Calf Pasture Beach and Shady Beach due to the heavy rains Monday night, the city's Recreation and Parks Department said. Residents may still visit the beaches but cannot go in the water. Town beaches are also closed in Westport and Fairfield. If you want to swim in Long Island Sound, the beaches are open Tuesday at Sherwood Island State Park, according to the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection's website.
