Rye Students Awarded For Science Research Achievements RYE, N.Y. -- Five Rye High School students received Recognition of Excellence Awards for their achievements in science. Seniors Cristina Buenahora, Miranda Van Dijk and Thomas White and junior Reetish Kapoor all brought home medals from the New York State Science Olympiad's Lower Hudson Regional Competition. YMCA Hosts 25th Annual Rye Derby This Sunday RYE, N.Y. -- Three-time Olympic runner and former Rye resident Eamonn Coghlan will be the honorary chairman of the 25th annual Rye Derby and Healthy Kids Day, hosted this Sunday by the Rye YMCA. Coghlan is co-founder of the Derby and will be traveling from his home in Dublin, Ireland, for the event. He is known as the "Chairman of the Boards" for his success on the American indoor athletics circuit, and he broke the world record for the indoor mile on three separate occasions. Westchester Pancreatic Cancer Research Walk In Rye Raises $250K RYE, N.Y. -- The Lustgarten Foundation's fourth annual Pancreatic Cancer Research Walk held in Rye Town Park on Sunday raised $256,664 for the cause. More than 1,000 people participated in the 3-mile walk, which started at Rye Town Park. The walk and festivities were held in memory of Gigi Shanes-Hernandez of Rye, who died from pancreatic cancer in 2009. The event was organized by her husband, Steve, and daughter, Tara. All of the money raised by the event will be donated to the Lustgarten Foundation for pancreatic cancer research.
