Noel Bermudez-Chin, 18, suffers from schizophrenia, his family told Newsday following his arraignment on Monday, adding he refused to take medication for his mental illness.
Prosecutors said Bermudez-Chin tossed a pot of hot oil and hot water on Joseph Falvo, 61, at the family’s residence in East Northport just before 4 a.m. Sunday, March 29, then stabbed Falvo in the back, neck, and chest, according to WNBC.

A Long Island man plied a vulnerable woman with crack cocaine, then sex trafficked her under threat of a violence, a jury found Monday, March 30.
Mitchell Johnson, a 38-year-old Farmingville man, was convicted of sex trafficking and promoting prostitution, the Suffolk County District Attorney’s office announced.
Johnson enticed the victim in March 2023 by pretending to be another woman, then preyed on her crack addiction, prosecutors said. He then forced the victim to remain in a motel room and perform sex acts for money, according to investigators.
