Letter: Don't Forget To Vote, Darien Letter: Don't Forget To Vote, Darien Letter: Don't Forget To Vote, Darien
Letter: Don't Forget To Vote, Darien DARIEN, Conn. – The following letter was written by Darien resident Sara Franzese. A vote: a formal expression of opinion or choice made by an individual. In 2008, nearly 87 percent of Darienites declared their choice for the next president. That number dropped by nearly half in the 2009 Darien municipal election, where only 44 percent voted for the next leaders of our town. Almost two years have passed, and we are again faced with the opportunity to vote. And we are again faced with choices. Jayme Stevenson, Dave Campbell and Jerry Nielsen are accomplished leaders, proactive problem solver…
Letter: Vote For Republicans Is A Vote For Darien Letter: Vote For Republicans Is A Vote For Darien Letter: Vote For Republicans Is A Vote For Darien
Letter: Vote For Republicans Is A Vote For Darien In their run for the selectman's office two years ago, I wrote a letter of support and made a donation to the campaign for the "We are United" team of Dave Campbell, Jayme Stevenson and Jerry Nielsen. Our town is a better place because of their tireless dedication and leadership that always has a common theme: "What is best for Darien." Our appreciation for all they have done and what they can accomplish in the next two years can best be expressed by voting Nov. 8 for Jayme Stevenson, David Campbell and Jerry Nielsen. It's not a vote against other candidates, it's a vote for Darien. - David…
Letter: Darien Democrats Are Civil And Cordial Letter: Darien Democrats Are Civil And Cordial Letter: Darien Democrats Are Civil And Cordial
Letter: Darien Democrats Are Civil And Cordial I plan to vote for the Democrats in the upcoming local election. I'm counting on that slate - John Lundeen, Vickie Riccardo and David Bayne - to bring us back to the days when Ann Mandel, Ruth Shattuck Max McCreery and Gil Lefferts were in office, a time when selectmen were political and also civil and cordial. Local Republicans everywhere are responsible for the type of Republicans who we see performing in Congress these days. The current group who hold such national office (with few shining exceptions) as well as the majority of Republican candidates who dream of being president seem to m…

Rowayton Artist Inspired by Natural World Rowayton Artist Inspired by Natural World Rowayton Artist Inspired by Natural World
Rowayton Artist Inspired by Natural World DARIEN, Conn. – Though most artists stick with a traditional canvas surface for painting, Rowayton artist Lynn Stephens Massey uses something a little less conventional – paper bags. Massey's work is on display for the rest of the month at the Darien Rowayton Bank. "I've been doing more work on brown paper bags because they are recyclable and adhere to the theme of being eco-friendly," she said. Massey paints bright, colorful watercolors of natural objects such as shells and insects. She applies an acrylic varnish to each work to protect it without a glass frame. She says it makes her work m…
Letter: Continue With Current Darien Selectmen Letter: Continue With Current Darien Selectmen Letter: Continue With Current Darien Selectmen
Letter: Continue With Current Darien Selectmen DARIEN, Conn. – The following letter was written by Darien resident Chris La Jaunie. Soon Gov. Malloy's tax increases (the largest in state history) will take effect, a sad reality that will hit us hard into the end of a tough year. With 9.1 percent unemployment, Connecticut ranks among the worst in our country. By most counts, however, we in Darien should count ourselves fortunate. We have excellent schools and lower property taxes than most of our neighboring towns. And we have very competent leadership in the current team of selectmen. Next month, we will have a choice to continue that l…
Darien Kids Jump for a World Record Darien Kids Jump for a World Record Darien Kids Jump for a World Record
Darien Kids Jump for a World Record DARIEN, Conn. – Students at Royle School joined First Lady Michelle Obama and National Geographic Kids magazine Wednesday in an attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the most people doing jumping jacks in a 24-hour period. The "Let's Jump!" initiative is part of a campaign to get kids active and show the fun in exercising. Royle joined in the jump after third-grader Stephen Kletter read about the event in National Geographic Kids and asked his gym teacher, Jill Cardamone, if Royle could participate. At 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, everyone in the entire school got together to do one minute …
Bayne Says Unity Needed Among Darien Selectmen Bayne Says Unity Needed Among Darien Selectmen Bayne Says Unity Needed Among Darien Selectmen
Bayne Says Unity Needed Among Darien Selectmen DARIEN, Conn. – As the sole commuter on the Darien Board of Selectmen, Democrat David Bayne often spends his mornings on the train platform, chatting with his fellow Metro-North riders and finding out what issues matter to them. As he runs for re-election to the board, he is hoping to continue to serve that demographic, as well as build more unity among the board members. "A lot of commuters don't have time for town government. I try to be a voice for that group," said Bayne, a lawyer who works in midtown Manhattan and who has served on the board for four years. In his time as a selectman, …
Letter: Darien Democrats Offer Better Shuffle Plan Letter: Darien Democrats Offer Better Shuffle Plan Letter: Darien Democrats Offer Better Shuffle Plan
Letter: Darien Democrats Offer Better Shuffle Plan DARIEN, Conn. – The following letter was written by Darien resident Laura Woodward Cavers. How did we get to this? Plan A: 1) After renovating and expanding on the Board of Education space at Town Hall, shuffle the seniors to there. 2) Push out the Board of Education offices, happily content in Town Hall, to the old library site, which, by the way, is too large for the Board of Ed's needs and will need extensive retooling of those large open rooms into the small private offices that it utilizes. 3) And then force something (we don't know what) on the Edgerton Street residents, who have b…
