I am writing to urge your readers to support Jayme Stevenson for first selectman, and David Campbell and Jerry Nielsen for selectman this November. As residents of the town of Darien, we are blessed to have such a dedicated team willing to commit their time and expertise for the benefit of the town. Jayme, Dave and Jerry have very deep roots in Darien and clearly have shown a passion for our town and for getting things done and done right. They have managed our town very efficiently leveraging their long h…

Darien Businesses Reflect on Good Economic Signs DARIEN, Conn. – The recession is still hitting Fairfield County businesses hard and nearly half don't expect to be profitable this year, according to a new survey released Tuesday. Although the outlook is bleak, there is some hope for Darien businesses. The 2011 Fairfield County Business Survey, published by the Connecticut Business & Industry Association and the Stamford Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with Blum Shapiro and TD Bank, found that 53 percent of those surveyed expected to turn a profit in 2011. That is 7 percentage points lower than the 60 percent of county businesses th…
Darien Shuffle Project Clears Another Hurdle Darien Shuffle Project Clears Another Hurdle Darien Shuffle Project Clears Another Hurdle
Darien Shuffle Project Clears Another Hurdle DARIEN, Conn. – The shuffle project that would relocate the Senior Center to Town Hall and the Board of Education offices to 35 Leroy Ave. took another step forward as the Darien Board of Finance voted Tuesday night to approve its funding. The Representative Town Committee must still approve the $6.9 million project before it moves forward. Building Committee Chairman Norm Guimond and First Selectman Dave Campbell presented the plan to the board, reiterating the arguments that the current Senior Center is in disarray and the proposal for the new center is the most cost-effective solution for…
Darien Police Warn of Bizarre Burglaries Darien Police Warn of Bizarre Burglaries Darien Police Warn of Bizarre Burglaries
Darien Police Warn of Bizarre Burglaries DARIEN, Conn. – A string of unusual burglaries in Darien and surrounding towns have the Darien police warning residents to take precautions. Thieves have been gaining entry to houses by cutting holes in second floor exterior walls. The burglars are primarily targeting jewelry. They first hit a house on Pembroke Road in August and then a house on Valley Forge Road in September. On Sunday, residents of a home on Inwood Road fell victim to the same type of robbery. They returned home to find that thieves had removed the shingles on the side of the house, cut through the plywood sheeting with a…
Letter: Darien Selectmen Don't Drive Mill Rate Letter: Darien Selectmen Don't Drive Mill Rate Letter: Darien Selectmen Don't Drive Mill Rate
Letter: Darien Selectmen Don't Drive Mill Rate DARIEN, Conn. — With a chuckle, I read campaign criticism of Jayme Stevenson, Dave Campbell and Jerry Nielsen as driving the mill rate increases of Darien. As former chairman of the Board of Finance, I feel obligated to comment and help educate on the budgetary picture. First and foremost, the selectmen never vote on the mill rate, and do not even propose one. The mill rate is adopted by the Board of Finance and approved by the Representative Town Meeting. Second, the part of the budget under that is control of the selectmen is only 26 percent of the total Darien budget. Debt service is 8 p…

Letter: Darien Republicans Line Up Achievements DARIEN, Conn. – The following letter was written by Darien resident Richard DiDonna. This letter is in support of the re-election of our Board of Selectmen team of Jayme Stevenson, Dave Campbell and Jerry Nielsen. These outstanding individuals have demonstrated a remarkable record of achievement in just two years and have shown that they know how to get things done that need to be done. Rather than just talking about a housing moratorium, they have actually obtained one. Rather than just talking about affordable housing, they have proactively innovated and supported projects that are provi…

Darien Candidates Split Over Debate Details DARIEN, Conn. – In a proposed third debate between Darien's candidates for first selectman, the biggest question so far has been whether the debate will even occur. After much argument over time and place, the debate will take place Oct. 27 at 11:30 a.m. at the Darien Library. The debate was first proposed by Democratic candidate John Lundeen's campaign manager Randy Klein, who invited Republican Jayme Stevenson to a media-moderated debate a couple weeks ago at the Darien Times' weekly coffee at the Sugar Bowl. Stevenson accepted the invitation and suggested the debate take place at the Seni…
