Letter: 'Shuffle' Is a Bad Use of Darien's Money Letter: 'Shuffle' Is a Bad Use of Darien's Money Letter: 'Shuffle' Is a Bad Use of Darien's Money
Letter: 'Shuffle' Is a Bad Use of Darien's Money DARIEN, Conn. – The following letter on the Shuffle Project to move the Senior Center and Board of Education offices was submitted by Darien resident Stacy Branca. I am dismayed and I am aggravated. Our current administration's potential lack of fiscal responsibility and use of our town monies is disappointing. Like most people in Darien, I agree that we need a new Senior Center. I also agree that debt is cheap and now is the time to do it. However, building a new Senior Center does not need to turn into a $12 million project that requires "shuffling" people, departments and buildings. Debt…
Shuffle Dominates Darien Candidate Debate Shuffle Dominates Darien Candidate Debate Shuffle Dominates Darien Candidate Debate
Shuffle Dominates Darien Candidate Debate DARIEN, Conn. – The proposed "shuffle" project to move around the Senior Center and Board of Education offices was the most talked about issue in the debate Tuesday night among Darien's candidates for first selectman. Jayme Stevenson, Chris Noe and John Lundeen also discussed affordable housing and working together. Republican candidate Stevenson maintained her position that building a new Senior Center at Town Hall and moving the Board of Education offices to the old library building at 35 Leroy Ave. would create a new amenity that would add "tremendous personal, social and financial value …

Letter: Republican Supports Darien's Democrats DARIEN, Conn. – The following letter was written by Darien resident Bart Ice. Although I have been a longtime registered Republican, I believe that the partisanship that characterizes the national debate rarely belongs in a small town like ours. Thus, I have been upset by the lack of both transparency and a cooperative attitude in the outgoing Darien administration. Its approach seems to reflect an influential part of the local party, but hopefully not a majority of Darien Republicans. The results have been discouraging: too little progress has been made on a host of pressing issues. More n…
Nielsen Wants To Continue Bringing Darien Together Nielsen Wants To Continue Bringing Darien Together Nielsen Wants To Continue Bringing Darien Together
Nielsen Wants To Continue Bringing Darien Together DARIEN, Conn. – Jerry Nielsen is at his family business, Nielsen's Florist, every day getting feedback from Darien residents and feeling the pulse of the town. Nielsen has a passion for Darien and is seeking re-election to the Board of Selectmen to continue to work for the town. The most important thing he says he wants to accomplish is to finish moving the Senior Center to Town Hall. When Nielsen was first elected to the board, he didn't know much about the state of the Senior Center. But after a visit, Nielsen has seen how it has fallen into disrepair. "I was so embarrassed as a citizen,"…
Norwalk Woman Teaches the Dangers of Drugs Norwalk Woman Teaches the Dangers of Drugs Norwalk Woman Teaches the Dangers of Drugs
Norwalk Woman Teaches the Dangers of Drugs DARIEN, Conn. – A personal account of the dangers of substance abuse was presented to Middlesex Middle School eighth-graders when Ginger Katz gave a talk last week on her son Ian's death from a heroin overdose at the age of 20. Katz, a Norwalk resident, told the students about how drugs robbed her son of his future and advised them to make smart choices when they are confronted with situations involving drugs and alcohol. She also told them to find at least three adults in their lives who they can confide in about anything. Katz created the nonprofit the Courage to Speak Foundation shortly …

Letter: Republican Team Wins Over Darien Resident DARIEN, Conn. – The following letter was written by Darien resident Lesley Osborn. As a mother of two young children, I have been busy for the past few years, engaging mostly in volunteer activities related to our family. Following local politics has been a challenge. I see the names on signs around town, yet I feel only vaguely familiar with the candidates. That just changed for me. I met Jayme Stevenson at a gathering hosted by my good friend Ciara Thurlow. Jayme was beyond impressive: articulate, positive and knowledgeable. She is passionate about our town's issues, including the enviro…

Letter: Bayne Is Most Experienced Darien Selectman DARIEN, Conn. – The following letter was written by Darien resident Robert Vilter. David Bayne brings to the Board of Selectman four years of experience as a selectman, making him the most experienced of the candidates running for the board. David has demonstrated an unwavering commitment and passion for the job of selectman – his objective has been to take action and make decisions which improve the quality of life of all of Darien's residents in the most rationale and cost-effective way, thereby minimizing our tax burden. David has repeatedly displayed intelligent, independent and strong …
Letter: Elected Officials Work for Darien Letter: Elected Officials Work for Darien Letter: Elected Officials Work for Darien
Letter: Elected Officials Work for Darien DARIEN, Conn. – The following letter on the third debate between Darien's first selectman candidates was written by Darien resident Debbie Ice. So, it's a democracy. We graciously accommodate challengers in a democracy because we don't want our government to forget who they are – elected officials who work for the town. It's election time and the challengers to the status quo ask for a third debate, wanting as much exposure as possible. The present government official says, OK but only at 1 p.m., on Nov. 3 (past media deadlines so nothing would be in the paper) and ONLY at the Senior Cente…
