Darien Candidates Take On Commuter Issues, Floods DARIEN, Conn. – Darien's three candidates for first selectman met Thursday for a final debate, discussing such issues as how to make life easier for commuters, how to deal with flooding and how to work together after the election. Democratic candidate John Lundeen, who was a commuter for about 20 years, pointed out the difference in quality between the Noroton Heights train station and the Darien train station. He said he would like work to be done at the Noroton Heights station, citing platform extension as one need. Republican Jayme Stevenson said work is being done to add sidewalks to Ho…

Darien Woman Charged With Shoplifting Beads DARIEN, Conn. – Anne Curtis, 29, of Darien, was arrested Oct. 12 on a charge of shoplifting nearly $1,000 worth of merchandise at Beadz Boutique a month earlier. An employee was closing up the store Sept. 17 when he noticed that two jade pendants, worth $200 each, were missing. Upon reviewing the surveillance video, a woman matching Curtis' description could be seen picking up a tray of pendants at the register counter, walking through the store with them and then walking out without paying. Employees conducted inventory and discovered that a number of beads and pendants were missing. About…
Letter: Focus On Real Issues, Not Politics Letter: Focus On Real Issues, Not Politics Letter: Focus On Real Issues, Not Politics
Letter: Focus On Real Issues, Not Politics DARIEN, Conn. – The following letter was written by Matt Troy, a member of the Darien Republican Town Committee. Does it make sense to run if you can't catch a train? To seek political office, and once elected, question the time required to serve, raises the issue of putting self-interest ahead of responsibility. Then to politicize the issue, claiming that adhering to established practices demonstrates a lack of empathy for a certain group (in this case, commuters), is disingenuous at best. I compare this to a college graduate applying for a job that, once hired, complains the hours conflic…

Darien Candidate Looks to Keep School Costs Down DARIEN, Conn. – As a parent and a member of the Representative Town Meeting's Finance and Budget Committee, Michael Anton Harman has seen the Board of Education's budget-approval process. He now is running uncontested for an open seat on the board and is hoping to help Darien schools get the most out of its funding. "My reason to pursue this seat has been an interest in trying to help on the special education side," Harman said. Special education has faced problems in the past couple of years, with unfunded mandates and legal problems forcing the department to go back to the town for more mo…

Letter: Darien Republicans Have Guts And Integrity DARIEN, Conn. – The following letter was written by Darien resident Laurie Williamson. This letter is to support the re-election of Jayme Stevenson, Dave Campbell and Jerry Nielsen to the Board of Selectmen on Nov. 8. They have served our town these past two years with a refreshing combination of guts and integrity as they have tackled one thorny issue after another. I believe they will continue their careful research, articulate and thoughtful discussion, and no-nonsense approach to getting results that are sensible and substantially agreeable to all.  They deserve profound appreciation f…
Letter: Shuffle Takes Away From Darien Schools Letter: Shuffle Takes Away From Darien Schools Letter: Shuffle Takes Away From Darien Schools
Letter: Shuffle Takes Away From Darien Schools DARIEN, Conn. – The following letter was submitted by Darien resident Shay Karczewski. I have heard it argued that Darien can "afford" the proposed $12 million facilities shuffle. Though the shuffle cost would push up our town debt to almost $100 million, the chairman of the Board of Finance said she was comfortable because she saw no major capital projects for the town coming down the pike, and no big hikes in operating expenses. If we can afford it, why doesn't Darien have an elementary foreign language program? Why are some of our teachers sharing classrooms? Let's think about what is be…

Letter: Shelve Darien's 'Shuffle' Project DARIEN, Conn. – The following letter was submitted by Darien resident Susan Helms. Thank you for this opportunity to ask the community to please support John Lundeen, Vickie Riccardo and David Bayne in the election on Nov. 8. These candidates comprise a slate of tremendous intelligence, civility and fiscal prudence that we need for sensible stewardship of our town. A vote for their opposition guarantees you multiple needless building projects, a resulting hefty tax hike and a loss of other potential opportunities.    As a former RTM member, I cannot recall a more contrived, economically wa…
