Letter: Stevenson is the Best Leader for Darien DARIEN, Conn. The following letter to the editor was written by Joanne Hennessy72 Holly Lane, Darien. Jayme Stevenson has all the right qualities to be an outstanding first selectman. She takes the time to learn all facets of the issues that need to be addressed in town. She has spent more time attending meetings, talking to concerned parties and listening to all sides than any other person I know of in town government. She is both reasoned and reasonable, making decisions governed not by politics, but by what makes the most sense. She leads by building consensus, having rational discussio…

Darien Gym Branches Out With Permanent Location DARIEN, Conn. There are no televisions or mirrors at Infinity Fitness, the new gym that just opened on Heights Road in Darien. Founder Dave Peterson didn't want anything that would distract people while they work out. "When our clients show up, they want to get a really good workout, get the results they came for and move on with their day," Peterson said. His background is in personal fitness, not starting businesses. But after working for many years in traditional gyms, he decided to strike out on his own. "I became disenfranchised with the system. Clients would come through the door and…

Letter: Re-elect Bayne to Board of Selectman DARIEN, Conn. The following letter to the editor was written by Michael Case of 46 Fairfield Ave., Darien: I am pleased to add my voice in support of David Bayne's re-election to the Board of Selectman on Nov. 8. David is a non-partisan voice for effective town government. A hallmark of his current term is his willingness to put Darien first and politics second. For example, during the March 2010 ice storm, when so many Darien homes were without power due to downed trees, David stepped up as acting first selectman to coordinate restoration of power and road clearance, and to keep the town …

Letter: Darien Is Not Just a Republican Town DARIEN, Conn. The following letter to the editor was written by Sunil Saksena of354 Hoyt St., Darien. Against a background of constant and rancorous bickering in Washington, D.C., I was heartened by the desire for bipartisanship as expressed in the campaign themes of both Republicans and Democrats: the Republicans' "We are United" and the Democrats' "Darien Working Together." However, on reading their respective platforms I was dismayed that the Republican team of Stevenson, Campbell and Nielsen wanted simply to unite their party, whereas the Democratic team of Lundeen, Bayne and Riccardo …

Gardens Will Let Darien Students Dig Into School DARIEN, Conn. Students at Darien's elementary schools will find out first-hand where food comes from as they learn to grow plants and everything that goes with that work. Darien plans to install gardens at the elementary schools to be maintained by students and tie the work in with the curriculums. "We envision these gardens as an on-site field trip designed to teach them real hands-on experience about some of the things they are learning," said John Rechi, principal of Ox Ridge Elementary School. When kindergartners are learning about the effects of seasons on living things or when fourth…

Letter: Darien 'Shuffle' Makes No Fiscal Sense DARIEN, Conn. The following letter to the editor is from Maribeth Sears of Darien: I was amused to see the Darien Times story "Architect Says Shuffle Makes Fiscal Sense," in which the Shuffle's architect said it makes sense for Darien taxpayers to pay him to do the project he designed. Wow, that's surprising. But that's not all. The Shuffle architect says it makes sense for Darien taxpayers to pay the $7+ million price even though it is millions more than originally budgeted (not to mention, millions more than the cost of a stand-alone senior center at the Edgerton site). I wonder if the …

Himes Tries To Calm Seniors' Social Security Fears DARIEN, Conn. Today's senior citizens don't have to worry about cuts in their Social Security, U.S. Rep. Jim Himes says. Although both political parties sometimes try to scare seniors about the state of Social Security and Medicare, Himes says those programs should be fine for a while. "Nobody's proposing anything that's going to significantly reduce your Social Security," Himes, D-4th District, told a group at the Darien Senior Center on Wednesday. "It's going to be very different for me, but not for you." To solve the budget crisis the country is now facing, politicians must put a…

Letter: Darien Democrats Offer Valuable Experience DARIEN, Conn. It is my pleasure to support the Democratic slate of candidates for selectmen. John Lundeen, David Bayne and Vickie Riccardo bring new solutions, strong commitment and enormous positive energy to the issues facing Darien. John's background in public sector budget analysis and planning will be invaluable in identifying areas where town costs can be cut without reducing services and new revenue generated through public/private partnerships. David, whom I have known personally and professionally for three decades, is indefatigable in his service to the town. A member of the Boa…
