New Darien Gallery Offers Unique Selection New Darien Gallery Offers Unique Selection New Darien Gallery Offers Unique Selection
New Darien Gallery Offers Unique Selection Many people were sad to see the Noroton Gallery, a staple in Darien for more than 35 years, close in February. But Darien residents Jeff Saverine and Drew Clark have reopened a new gallery, Darien Art and Frame, in the same location with the goal of bringing new and different art to Darien. "We have a shop full of stuff for neighbors who want a variety of unique work. Rather than the stuffy art gallery which it had been, with a finite group of people it's catering to, we offer what people are looking for," Saverine said. Among the new artists brought in include the popular Bren Bataclan, wh…

Darien Woman Honored for Lives She's Touched Darien resident Marge Harrington's résumé of volunteer work makes it appear there are few organizations in town she hasn't been involved in. Harrington was honored for her service Friday at the Darien Community Association, where she has served as president and in a number of other roles. Harrington was smiling from ear to ear as she accepted the Obie Harrington-Howes Community Spirit Award, an award named after her son-in-law, who also has devoted a lot of time to helping the community. However, for all he has done, Harrington-Howes says he is still known as "the father of Marge Harrington…
Darien Photographer Finds Intimate Moments Darien Photographer Finds Intimate Moments Darien Photographer Finds Intimate Moments
Darien Photographer Finds Intimate Moments An Indian yogi once saw in Ben Larrabee a unique ability to read people's faces, a skill the Darien resident has utilized to capture intimate moments and emotions as a portrait photographer. "I think what makes me different is I'm meditating into the camera, and the whole idea behind the portraits is to share the vision of that meditation," Larrabee said. "It's not about how a client looks or where they are, it's about the energy of their spirit." Larrabee likes to shoot his portraits in the subjects' own home, to capture them in their own environment. He'll often take 40 or more images in …

Darien Students Split on Prom Breathalyzer Tests Before Darien teens such as Sami Testa and Garren Fritts walk into the prom at the Stamford Hilton Hotel on Friday night, they must submit to a breathalyzer test and have their bags searched for alcohol. Some students view the practice as a necessary step to have their night of fun while others see it as an invasion of privacy. "I get why they do it," said Testa, a junior. Breathalyzer tests at dances have been standard practice at Darien High School since she was a freshman and she can understand the importance of keeping kids from drinking and driving. "It doesn't really bother me that muc…

Darien Republicans Seek To Shuffle Selectmen If all goes according to their plan, Jayme Stevenson, Dave Campbell and Jerry Nielsen will still be sitting on the Board of Selectmen after the November election, but their roles will be switched around a bit. It was announced this week that Campbell would not be seeking re-election as first selectman and that Stevenson would be seeking to take his place. "I'm very excited about the job. I feel like I've spent a good deal of time dedicating myself to the board and understanding the needs of the town. I'm eager to serve in that capacity if the town chooses that's what it wants," Stevenson sai…

Darien Woman Arrested After Fight Over Meds A young Darien woman was arrested at her home on Edgerton Street on Saturday after getting in a fight with her boyfriend and mother. Police said the woman returned home from a bar intoxicated at about 3 a.m. and asked her mother whether she had seen her prescription medication. The mother told her she had hidden it because she did not want her daughter mixing it with alcohol. The young woman started screaming, and when the mother and the young woman's boyfriend tried to calm her down, she got angrier.
