Darien Man Sends 21 Tons of Toys to Guatemala Darien Man Sends 21 Tons of Toys to Guatemala Darien Man Sends 21 Tons of Toys to Guatemala
Darien Man Sends 21 Tons of Toys to Guatemala For some people, spring cleaning means throwing out their old junk. For Darien resident Don Livingston, founder of Computers for Hope, it means loading 21 tons of toys, tools and vitamins and shipping them to children in Guatemala. "It's kind of neat. Almost all of this stuff came from the dump [transfer station] right across the street," Livingston said as he and movers cleared out their temporary headquarters on the Post Road.  The building is slated for demolition to make way for offices and apartments. The toys, all of which are in excellent condition, came from the transfer station. Th…
Caterer Brings New York Flair to Darien Caterer Brings New York Flair to Darien Caterer Brings New York Flair to Darien
Caterer Brings New York Flair to Darien Rebecca Martin travels from Darien to New York City at least once a week, trying out different restaurants and learning about the newest food trends. Then she takes what she learned back to Darien, where she recently opened Becca Innovative Catering. "Our foods and service that we offer are very edgy," Martin said. Her business adapts its style to a wide range of events. "If we're catering a high-end event, our service is more like that of the Pierre Hotel. We have models in three-piece suits serving. If we're at a casual event, our servers are more hip and cool and not wearing tuxedos with …
Darien Kids Dislike Teachers as Facebook Friends Darien Kids Dislike Teachers as Facebook Friends Darien Kids Dislike Teachers as Facebook Friends
Darien Kids Dislike Teachers as Facebook Friends Melanie Tzenova friended one of her journalism teachers on Facebook after she left for a position in another school district but the Darien High School junior says she wouldn't friend one of her current teachers. "It's awkward. I don't want them to see my personal information," she said. Tzenova knows teens who have friended their teachers, but she wants to keep her school life separate from her personal life. Many other students feel the same way. "It's a social network, and I don't really want to be socializing with my teachers," said Phoebe Cush, a sophomore. Like Tzenova, Cush also frie…
Arrest Made in Darien Bicycle Theft Arrest Made in Darien Bicycle Theft Arrest Made in Darien Bicycle Theft
Arrest Made in Darien Bicycle Theft Emmanuel Arrango, 20, of Norwalk, was charged April 28 with stealing a bike from the Noroton Heights train station. At about noon, an officer spotted Arrango riding away from the station on a yellow mountain bike. The officer had seen the bike unsecured near the bike rack earlier. He decided to stop Arrango because of the high number of bike thefts at the station. The officer asked whether the bike belonged to Arrango, and he admitted it did not. He said he had been kicked off the train on his way home from work in Stamford because he didn't pay the fare and did not want to walk home. He was…

Four Arrested in Darien on Drug Charges Three men and a teenager were arrested on drug charges Tuesday night at the same house on Old King's Highway North where Gov. Dannel Malloy's son was arrested on attempted robbery charges in 2009. Eric Sing, 21, of Darien; Victor Deleon, 30, of Bridgeport; Rahsen Fisher, 31, of Bridgeport, and an unnamed youthful offender were arrested after police received a call at about 9 p.m. that people were at the house, which was abandoned after a fire several months ago. When police arrived, they found Sing and the teenager in the driveway. Sing had a small amount of heroin and marijuana in his posse…

Darien Teens Struggle Over Killing of Bin Laden Darien Teens Struggle Over Killing of Bin Laden Darien Teens Struggle Over Killing of Bin Laden
Darien Teens Struggle Over Killing of Bin Laden The significance of the death of Osama bin Laden is a tough concept for Darien teens like Gabby and Enzo Acquavina to grasp. Because they were so young on Sept. 11, they don't feel, as many Americans do, that a great enemy has been vanquished. "It feels almost backwards, celebrating someone's death. I feel it's almost like when people were celebrating when our people died," Gabby said. The two were living on the Upper East Side when the World Trade Center was attacked. Gabby, who was in fourth grade, can remember kids being taken out of school, an announcement being made and teachers talk…

Darien School Celebrates 25 Years With Principal It is 9:30 a.m. at Ox Ridge Elementary School. The morning announcements have been read and the Pledge of Allegiance recited. Principal John Rechi steps into a kindergarten classroom. "Good morning, everyone! How is everyone doing today?" "Good morning, Mr. Rechi!," the children cheerfully reply. Rechi then wishes everyone a good day and proceeds to the next classroom to greet students, just as he has done almost every school day for the past 25 years. Making the rounds every morning to greet each classroom is just one of the special efforts Rechi has made that distinguishes him as an ou…
