Darien YMCA Goes Green With Renovation Project The Darien YMCA is getting a major facelift, with an emphasis on preserving the environment, improving early childhood education and maintaining a strong relationship with the neighboring community. Executive Director Pat Morrissey is hopeful that the large-scale renovation, which began in February, will be completed by next August. "We're doing it in phases because we want to keep school in session. Otherwise, we would be forced to close the school, and that's unacceptable," Morrissey said. The first phase involves adding a new center for the gymnastics program, which in recent years has b…

Darien Safety Fair Shows Dangers of Bad Driving Darien ninth-grader Jack Fitzsimmons was smiling as he was strapped into a crash simulator at the SADD Safety Fair on Tuesday. But he wasn't smiling after he experienced what it's like to be in a crash at 5 mph. "That hurt my chest," he said, rubbing the area where the safety belt pressed into him upon impact, which also knocked his hat clean off his head. "That was not fun. It definitely teaches me not to drink and drive. It was pretty painful." The simulator, dubbed "The Convincer," was just one of the presentations at the Students Against Drunk Driving Safety Fair held at Darien High Sch…

Darien Engagement Ring Swapped With Fake A woman living on Bailey Avenue in Darien put on her engagement ring Thursday and discovered that the diamond had been switched with a fake. Police said the ring had originally held a pear-shaped, 2.1-karat diamond on a platinum setting. But somebody had switched it with a smaller marquis cut, which is believed to be made of cubic zirconia. The woman said she had last seen the original diamond on the ring May 2, when somebody admired it. The ring was stored in a silver Tiffany jewelry box, which also contained other valuable jewelry that was not touched. There was no sign of forced entry in …

Darien Tests Fourth of July Fireworks Darien Tests Fourth of July Fireworks Darien Tests Fourth of July Fireworks
Darien Tests Fourth of July Fireworks Darien got an early glimpse of Independence Day on Tuesday night, when a test of 20 fireworks was shot off at Darien High School. First Selectman Dave Campbell was watching from the roof of the high school and thought the demonstration was great. "It's a great setting with the trees and everything. It's like it was made for it," he said. The Fourth of July fireworks, formerly a staple of Darien summers, were discontinued in 2002 when the new high school was built. The school's new turf field was seen as a potential fire hazard, and the town was unable to find a new location. In February, de…

Darien OKs Budget; Higher Tax Rate Looms The mill rate will increase 3.92 percent under the town's 2011-12 fiscal year budget that was passed by the Darien Representative Town Meeting on Monday night in a 55-20 vote with two abstentions. Board of Finance Chairman Liz Mao said, "We expect the town revenue to finally start rising after the financial downturn." Mao cited efforts to keep the town side of the budget down, specifically energy-saving initiatives such as adding a natural gas line to Town Hall and adding dual boilers to Hindley Elementary that can also run on natural gas, which is cheaper than oil. Two Unleashed Dogs Attack Darien Woman Two unleashed dogs attacked a woman and her dog Sunday in Darien’s Woodland Park, police reported. The woman reported that she had been walking her dog, which was on a leash, when they were approached by two other dogs, which were walking in front of their owners. The woman asked the owners if the dogs were friendly, to which they replied, "Sometimes." The two dogs then attacked the leashed dog. The woman had to lift her dog up by the harness in order to protect it. The two dogs then bit the woman on the arm. Because she was wearing long sleeves, the bites did not break the skin, but her dog …
