Middlesex Students Say No To Bullying Middlesex Students Say No To Bullying Middlesex Students Say No To Bullying
Middlesex Students Say No To Bullying Middlesex Middle School seventh-graders participated in a full day assembly on bullying called "Get Real." The anti-bullying program started with a presentation by a representative from the Anti-Defamation League who explained the serious ramifications of bullying. The students learned the four participants in bullying: the Target, the Perpetrator, the Bystander and the Ally as well as the role each plays. The seventh-graders then broke off into small groups to discuss what they learned and to reflect on how bullying affects their lives in and out of school. The students made posters to disp…
Hoyt St. Project Worries School Board Hoyt St. Project Worries School Board Hoyt St. Project Worries School Board
Hoyt St. Project Worries School Board The Darien Board of Education voiced concerns over the effect the proposed Hoyt Street affordable housing development might have on student safety. Board member Morgan Whittier was troubled by the bypass lane that would be added to Hoyt Street, reducing room for pedestrians. "I've had first-hand experience with the conditions on Hoyt Street, having had a child that went to Holmes," Whittier said at Tuesday’s board meeting. The development proposed by Chris and Margaret Stefanoni would be 470 feet from Holmes Elementary. "To widen the street would make things worse. It's outrageous." Super…

Police May Roam Halls of Darien High It's possible that police officers could be stationed in the halls of Darien High School, as Darien Police Chief Duane Lovello spoke to the Board of Education on Tuesday night about adding a school resource officer. The SRO would be available to handle safety concerns, as well as talk to kids about law enforcement and build relationships. "The school resource officer would be someone who would actively participate in the school environment, help kids arrive at better decisions on their own, and be a resource to them," Lovello said. He said that, if the school board decided to adopt an SRO pr…

Group Brings Darien Together To Help Youth Getting teens to avoid risky behaviors and develop positive assets is not something that can be accomplished simply. It is an ongoing process. Martha Rhein, coordinator of Darien's Thriving Youth: Connected Community, is working to improve the relationships, skills, opportunities and experiences of the youth of Darien. "It's not a program.
