Darien Students Happy to be Home for the Holidays It's Christmas time, and that means the college kids are rolling back in to town for a much-deserved break from their studies. Students Kristen Perry, Demi Gagliardi and Larsen McDowell say it's a little strange to be back in Darien, but they are having fun catching up and checking out their favorite hangout spots. "It's definitely weird being back," Gagliardi, a sophomore at the University of Charleston, said as she met her friends at Upper Crust Bakery & Cafe. "But we have such a tight group of friends. We talk and communicate all the time, and when we get home we're so excited to see …

"It's a great opportunity to get together during the holidays and help the community," said Brin Gasparino, a junior at Darien High School and member of the Depot's Student Governing Board. The fundraiser has been running since Saturday and ends Wednesday night. Gasparino said it can get pretty hectic. She herself wrapped 15 to 20 presents in an hour-and-a-half. Many kids come in multiple times to pitch in. "It's really …

Drunken Driver Causes Near-Crash in Darien Thomas Walsh, 46, of Norwalk, was arrested Thursday on charges of DWI and failure to grant right of way after nearly causing an accident on Interstate 95. At 12:20 a.m., Walsh merged his 2006 Toyota Tundra into traffic on I-95 southbound at the entrance ramp for Exit 13. He failed to grant right of way to another vehicle, causing that vehicle to swerve and almost get into an accident. Police stopped Walsh at Exit 10 and detected the strong odor of alcohol in his car. Darien Doubles Its Holiday Generosity Darien Doubles Its Holiday Generosity Darien Doubles Its Holiday Generosity
Darien Doubles Its Holiday Generosity It’s been like something out of a television Christmas special. Olive Hauser of Darien Social Services said that a couple weeks ago the agency didn’t have enough presents to give to needy families. But thanks to a viral campaign from Darien neighbors, they now have twice as many presents as they usually do. "It was alarming how little we had brought in," Hauser said. "We started reaching out to different groups and they responded in the most amazing way." Some of the initiatives to bring in gifts included the Darien Dog Group's holiday tree, and neighbors like Seana Turner, who adopts fam…

Darien Woman Adopts Families for the Holidays Living in Darien can be tough during the holidays if you've fallen on hard times. Seana Turner knows this, and for years has been working with different groups to "adopt" local families and ensure they have a memorable Christmas. "I started doing this around 10 years ago," she said. "I thought, this is a wealthy community, and it can be hard to live in this town and go through a rough spot. I wanted to find a family in Darien and help give them a good Christmas." Turner said she didn't know how to accomplish that task, so she approached Olive Hauser in Social Services and found a needy fami…
Darien Santa's Donned the Beard for 33 Years Darien Santa's Donned the Beard for 33 Years Darien Santa's Donned the Beard for 33 Years
Darien Santa's Donned the Beard for 33 Years Santa can't always make it down from the North Pole to visit every single store and mall to hear what kids want for Christmas. But for the past 33 years, Joe Warren Sr. has been stepping up and handling the job at the Darien Sport Shop. "Nobody's having more fun than I am," said Warren, who has a natural white flowing beard that withstands the tugs from kids who want to test his authenticity. He said most of the kids in Darien are on the "Nice" list, but he tries not to focus too much on whether they have been good or bad. "I don't want to frighten or put too much pressure on them. I tell t…

Digging Into Geography Pays Off for Darien Boy Without checking Wikipedia, can you name what National Park the Grand Staircase is in? How about which country the rumba originated? Middlesex sixth-grader Michael Borecki can, which is why he won the school Geographic Bee and will probably compete in the state competition in April. "I think it's interesting and fun to learn about new places," he said. Michael does so well because he enjoys reading, particularly about history. Ask him what happened between 1850 and 1950, his favorite historical period, and he can rattle off a number of important historical events. "A lot happened in the worl…

Darien Dog Group Fetches Toys For Needy Kids The Darien Dog Group does more than meet to walk their dogs in the mornings. In an effort spearheaded by Amy Sabrinowski and other members of the group, they decided last week to help Darien residents who may not have gifts for their children this holiday season. "Last Friday we put tags on a small evergreen in Cherry Lawn Park near the Darien Nature Center," Sabrinowski said. On the tags were suggestions of where to buy gift cards for high school and middle school students who otherwise may not receive gifts this year. "The generous women at the dog park went on a huge shopping spree." T…
