Family Honors Daughter's Memory in Safety Campaign Family Honors Daughter's Memory in Safety Campaign Family Honors Daughter's Memory in Safety Campaign
Family Honors Daughter's Memory in Safety Campaign Two days after his daughter Cassie was killed in a car accident because she did not put on her seatbelt, her father sprang into action. Tom Geary, owner of the Geary Gallery in Darien, didn't want anyone else to go through that same pain. From that mission sprang the "Click it for Cassie" campaign, which raises awareness about the importance of seatbelt safety. "We designed the bumper sticker to give out to all of the kids at her school so they would understand the importance of wearing a seatbelt," he said. After Cassie's funeral, they designed a website and started sending out more bumper …

Darien Toy Store Owner Embraces Dream Bill Jensen worked in the oil industry for 27 years. But ever since he was a kid, he always wanted to make toys — or at least sell them. Two-and-a-half years ago, Jensen was passing by a store property that was for sale and saw a chance to make his dream come true. "I thought, 'This is it, go for it,'" Jensen said. He turned the property into the popular Darien Toy Box, where kids flock to pick out their favorite playthings. Jensen loves the change in careers. "This is totally different," he said. "It's a lot of fun to read the books and play with all the neat toys." Jensen was honored rece…

Darien Woman Finds Miracle on her Doorstep Two days before Christmas, Pat Gallagher heard a sound at her door and noticed a red-hooded figure hurrying away. When she checked her front door, she found a quart-sized mason jar filled with money that the person had anonymously left for her. "It was so heavy it took two of us to carry it inside," said Gallagher, who lives alone on Allen O'Neill Drive. She brought it in with the help of her friend Phyllis, but she was unable to find out who left the surprise gift. "We asked around but nobody could tell us who might have sent it. Everybody was delighted with the story of this unexpected Ch…

Darien Shop Stitches Friendly Atmosphere When a little girl from Darien walked into the House of Needlepoint looking to take up a new craft, co-owner Kim Kernan grabbed the best kit that would help her learn, and then sat her down and taught her how to start with needlepoint. That's the kind of atmosphere Kernan and her business partner Beth Crump encourage in the store. "We have formal classes, but we're always willing to sit down and show people how to do it," Kernan said. "We also have a regular group that comes in on Tuesdays and will sit and stitch while they talk and gossip." House of Needlepoint had been a fixture in Darien…

Metro-North Aims To Be Back on Track Metro-North Aims To Be Back on Track Metro-North Aims To Be Back on Track
Metro-North Aims To Be Back on Track Commuters can rest easy knowing that Metro-North train service will resume its regular weekday schedule Wednesday morning. Jim Cameron, a Darien resident and head of the Connecticut Rail Commuter Council, praised Metro-North for the job it has done recovering from the weekend blizzard. "I think they deserve a lot of credit for what they did in restoring service after an incredible blizzard. I don't think the Long Island Rail Road or New Jersey Transit were as quick in getting back service," Cameron said. Metro-North erred on the side of caution in getting service back, including running the…

Kids in Darien Add Up to State Record Residents like newcomer Hui Wang, who just moved to town with her husband and two young children, are the reason that Darien has the highest per capita population of children under 18 in the state, according to recently released data from the U.S. Census Bureau. The biggest draw among parents seems to be the schools. "We moved here in the middle of September. The school system was definitely a factor in our decision," said Wang. She also cited the close proximity to New York City as a deciding factor. Though she is new in town, she said she could appreciate the services for kids such as the …

Salvation Army Volunteers Ring In Holiday Cheer Salvation Army Volunteers Ring In Holiday Cheer Salvation Army Volunteers Ring In Holiday Cheer
Salvation Army Volunteers Ring In Holiday Cheer If you've visited the Stop & Shop in the Goodwives Shopping Center, you may have been greeted by the smiling face of Charlie Goden, a Salvation Army volunteer for 10 years. Goden, who speaks very little English, first became a Salvation Army bell ringer through his church and has been doing it ever since. He sometimes stands outside ringing the bell and collecting money for up to seven hours a day, bundled up in his leather jacket, gloves, and a Santa hat that lights up. "Sometimes I'm cold, sometimes I'm not," he said. He was joined on Wednesday afternoon by Antonio Sandobal, who was p…
