Darien School Chief Plans 8% Budget Increase The budget for the Darien schools is expected to increase by $5.7 million, or 7.97 percent, for the 2011-12 fiscal year to cover contractual obligations to teachers for salaries and health care, increased enrollment and loss of federal grant money. "Even if we were to hold our all staffing as it currently exists, meaning no additions and no reductions, our contractual obligations are still almost $1.9 million, which equals 2.7 percent of the overall budget increase," said superintendent Stephen Falcone, who is presenting his first budget as superintendent of the Darien schools. Darien Forum Stresses Internet Safety for Kids Trish Whitehead makes sure that when her kids are online, she knows what they're doing and who they are talking to. Even so, she joined other Darien parents at the middle school Thursday night to hear experts explain how to protect kids from cyber-bullying and online predators. The program was sponsored by Parent Awareness.  "Panels and discussions like this should be held with the children at least once a year," Whitehead said. She said that it is important to teach kids how to carry themselves online, and not talk to strangers. It's also important to keep them from posting pictures and me…

Darien Selectman Focuses on Work, Not Elections Darien's Republican selectmen have already announced that they will be seeking re-election. But Democrat Callie Sullivan has no idea whether she will be running again. She says she's too busy to have given it much thought. "Being a candidate is hard. Once you announce you're running, everything you do is seen through a lens as being political," Sullivan said. She is keeping busy by working on the town budget for next year. "When you put together the budget, you have to decide not only what you want to live with today in terms of services and employees, but also what you're setting up for to…

Kids Flip, Jump, Wipe Out in Darien Snow Kids Flip, Jump, Wipe Out in Darien Snow Kids Flip, Jump, Wipe Out in Darien Snow
Kids Flip, Jump, Wipe Out in Darien Snow Wednesday was the first full day off from school that Darien kids have had, and they were taking full advantage of it at Town Hall by sledding down the hill, jumping into large piles of snow and pelting each other with snowballs. "We've been playing outside all day. We built snow forts and snow tunnels out of what the plows leave on the side of the road," said Holm Roser. The kids were psyched to be able to actually get time off to enjoy the winter weather. One snow storm occurred this winter while they were on Christmas break and another only gave them an early dismissal. Some of the kid…

Cecilia Lee, one of her students, said, "It seems like she really loves the subject, and that makes us excited." Ruegger said she intended to be a researcher before switching to teaching.
