20 More Inches Buries Darien Deeper 20 More Inches Buries Darien Deeper 20 More Inches Buries Darien Deeper
20 More Inches Buries Darien Deeper Richard Barbour used to live in Michigan, so he is used to large amounts of snow every winter. He is probably one of the only ones in Darien who does not mind the 70 inches of snow that have fallen in the last month. "This is nothing foreign to me," Barbour said as he shoveled the sidewalk in front of his West Avenue home. "At least I don't have to go to the health club and work out today." Four inches of snow fell during the day Wednesday, and Darien got another 16 overnight. Despite getting 20 inches of snow in less than 24 hours, the Darien Police said that no accidents or emergencies ha…

Darien Library Gives More Bang for the Buck The Darien Library is the taxpayers' most used resource, and it is making sure that it delivers its services at a low price. The library is looking to increase its spending next year by $73,278, or 2.3 percent of its budget, the lowest increase in more than 25 years. "We are the place that is most used by residents out of any organization in town. We are used by the entire community," Director Louise Berry said at the Board of Selectmen meeting Wednesday night when the budget was presented. To keep costs down, no library employees will receive a raise next year. Full-time employees will red…

Darien Parents Question School Cop Proposal Darien Parents Question School Cop Proposal Darien Parents Question School Cop Proposal
Darien Parents Question School Cop Proposal Darien parents were critical Tuesday morning of a proposal from school officials to have an armed police officer stationed at the high school as a student resource. One was more than critical.   "I think it's an outrage that you would put armed men in the halls of the school," Cecil Wade said at a forum for high school parents. "All you're doing is training our kids to live in a police state." Darien Police Chief Duane Lovello said an armed Student Resource Officer would be able to protect students in case of a threat from a student or intruder. "If you go to any community across the coun…
Jewelry Grabbed From Another Darien Home Jewelry Grabbed From Another Darien Home Jewelry Grabbed From Another Darien Home
Jewelry Grabbed From Another Darien Home Thieves made off with jewelry and a computer from a Darien home last week. It was the second burglary in recent weeks in which jewelry and computers were taken. The owners of a house on Intervale Road told police they left last Wednesday, Jan. 19, at 8:30 a.m. and returned at 5 p.m., but did not notice until 8:30 p.m. that a Dell computer and some gold and silver jewelry had been taken from two bedrooms. When police responded, they found no sign of forced entry and believe the thieves entered the house through the unlocked garage doors. Also from the police blotter: Adam Allam, 46, was ch…

Service Delayed: Commuters Waiting For New Trains Commuters such as Mac Budd who travel on Metro-North every day are still waiting for the new rail cars that were supposed to arrive last month. However, with Metro-North continuing to experience problems with its testing, it could be some time before the new cars carry passengers. "I can't wait for them. These [old] trains have been around 40 years. They've definitely seen better days. They experience a lot of problems," Budd said. "And it's not cheap, the rates keep going up." Steve Eaton, another commuter, said, "It will be nice if we eventually get them. I mean, [the old cars] function, …

GOP Club Says Hartford Kills the Golden Goose GOP Club Says Hartford Kills the Golden Goose GOP Club Says Hartford Kills the Golden Goose
GOP Club Says Hartford Kills the Golden Goose Joi Gallo of the Republican Club of Darien says people need to be aware of how state government is spending their money and of the effect of high taxes. That's why the club is hosting Fergus Cullen of the Yankee Institute on Thursday at 7 p.m. at the Darien Library, the first in a series of talks titled "Tightening the Belt." "Hartford sees us as the golden goose. But with incomes down and people unable to find jobs, people see the raise in tax rates and say, 'Why even live here?' " Gallo said. "A lot of people in Darien don't pay close enough attention to what's going on in Hartford," she…
