Ice Storm Striking Darien Ice Storm Striking Darien Ice Storm Striking Darien
Ice Storm Striking Darien More ice is on the way for Darien from Tuesday night into Wednesday morning. The National Weather Service has issued ice storm and freezing rain warnings for southern Fairfield County, effective until 6 p.m. Wednesday. Darien is expected to receive freezing drizzle and sleet Tuesday night, with the freezing rain picking up after midnight. The freezing rain will continue steadily into Wednesday afternoon, tapering off before the evening. Between a quarter-inch and a half-inch of ice is expected to accumulate, making travel difficult. The Darien Police issued a warning to residents, asking th…
Darien May Turn to Solar Power Darien May Turn to Solar Power Darien May Turn to Solar Power
Darien May Turn to Solar Power Darien may soon take a great step forward, as Connie Melvin of the Darien Environmental Group put it, and use sunlight to power Town Hall. "Any time you can reduce the town's dependence on a non-renewable source, it's a good thing," Melvin said. The Board of Selectmen recently approved an $80,500 transfer to help pay for solar panels. Most of the cost of the project would be covered by $356,255 in federal stimulus grants and a $29,777 rebate from Connecticut Light & Power. Funds from the town must be set aside before the grant application can be made.   "This would give us something…
Hoyt Street Waiting for Sidewalks Hoyt Street Waiting for Sidewalks Hoyt Street Waiting for Sidewalks
Hoyt Street Waiting for Sidewalks Holly Schulz used to walk to the Talmadge Hill train station from her house on Hoyt Street, but after she got clipped by cars twice she decided to drive. Many residents who still walk to the station have been waiting six years for Darien to install sidewalks to make their trip safer. "Every single night I pass residents walking down that street, trying not to get hit. I don't think this is a low priority item," Schulz said. The project has been stalled since 2004, when residents started asking for sidewalks on Hoyt Street. Since then, Schulz and her fellow residents have been knocking on doo…

Darien Handyman Suffers With Higher Gas Prices Darien Handyman Suffers With Higher Gas Prices Darien Handyman Suffers With Higher Gas Prices
Darien Handyman Suffers With Higher Gas Prices Darien has gotten 70 inches of snow in the past month, and TJ Takseraas has been busy plowing driveways and parking lots. But the thing hurting him the most is not the amount of snow but the high price of gas. "It's killing my business," said Takseraas, who runs the Handyman Can, a home improvement company. "Nobody wants to pay the increase in price." According to Connecticutgasprices.com, which ranks the highest and lowest prices in the area, Darien's prices are among the highest in Fairfield County. The cheapest station in town is the Citgo at Tokeneke Road and Five Mile River Road, where…
Darien Pizza Guy Believes in Giving Back Darien Pizza Guy Believes in Giving Back Darien Pizza Guy Believes in Giving Back
Darien Pizza Guy Believes in Giving Back Former Heights Pizza owner Nick Criscuolo learned how to make pies when he was 12 years old living outside of Naples, Italy. He later taught his son Aldo how to make pizza. But he also taught him something more important: the joy of giving back to the community. "A lot of people think you have to be shrewd to be a businessman, but I taught my sons to be who you are, to be good and honest to people," Nick said. "You make friends, not just customers. They become a part of your life." Nick opened his first pizza place, Nick's Pizza, in Stamford in 1967. He opened Heights Pizza in 1991 and ha…
Darien Middle Schoolers Spread Their Wings Darien Middle Schoolers Spread Their Wings Darien Middle Schoolers Spread Their Wings
Darien Middle Schoolers Spread Their Wings Eighth-graders at Middlesex Middle School fused their creativity and knowledge of physics in a Flugtag (German flight day, or air show) event. The students built small flying devices called Fliegenvogels and launched them off the roof of the school with the help of science teacher Will Haher and English teacher Tim Sorensen. The middle schoolers were divided into 28 teams. Each designed a small aircraft capable of carrying a 5-pound weight. The teams also designed their own team logos, costumes and PEZ dispenser pilots. The kids gave presentations on their aircraft, which were designed to…
Darien Kids Dig Out the Elderly Darien Kids Dig Out the Elderly Darien Kids Dig Out the Elderly
Darien Kids Dig Out the Elderly Like many kids, Andrew Winter had to shovel his driveway and sidewalk Thursday. However, when he was done, he sprang into action shoveling walkways for elderly Darien residents as part of the Shoveling for Seniors program. "This is the most demanding it's been all year," Winter said of the 20 inches of snow that fell on Darien Wednesday night. But even though it can be back-breaking work, he says it's worth the labor. "It's a really good program. A lot of these seniors have mobility issues. We come out so they don't have to get out there and shovel it themselves." Winter is the coordinato…
Darien Parents Question Some Snow Days Darien Parents Question Some Snow Days Darien Parents Question Some Snow Days
Darien Parents Question Some Snow Days Darien parent Bozena Patrosz enjoys playing with her kids in the snow when school is canceled, but it can be stressful to repeatedly make arrangements to watch them. "I work, so I have to take the day off," Patrosz said. "It can be tough to entertain them. You have to keep them busy." Two of the four canceled days were the result of heavy snowfall, but there were two last week when Patrosz and other parents including Sean Brown say the school system may have been a little too quick to cancel classes. "When it rained last week it should have been a 90-minute delay instead of a cancellation,"…
