Darien Trunk Show Supports Women's Causes It's important for women like Jennifer St. Jean to look good while they support a good cause. That's why she attended a fundraising trunk show Friday morning at Callie Sullivan's house, featuring trendy clothes from the W Collection. "The title for this show is 'Giving Is Always In Fashion,'" said Sally Cordovano of W, which is based out of New York City and whose clothes are sold exclusively through private trunk shows. Cordovano said she has known Sullivan a long time and approached her about hosting a trunk show. "Our company is women-based, and we're very supportive of women's causes. We…

Catching Up With Former Darien Selectman Klein Evonne Klein spent six years as first selectman of Darien, including two years leading Darien's first Democrat-controlled board in 187 years. Though Klein has kept herself busy working for the Democratic Town Committee and campaigning for various candidates, she has also been able to take some time for herself. "It's great to be able to have time to be with my family and spend more time with friends. I can leave town now without checking my phone and worrying about what's going on," she said. Klein joined the Board of Selectmen in 2001. She served as first selectman from 2003 to 2009 before…

Instead, the group finds ways to cultivate 40 developmental assets in children, such as positive family communication, caring neighborhoods, achievement motivation and school engagement. "There's a ton of evidence that shows that these…

Are Darien Students Working Too Hard? Are Darien Students Working Too Hard? Are Darien Students Working Too Hard?
Are Darien Students Working Too Hard? It's midterm week at Darien High School and students like Shannon Beatty will spend as many as seven hours in the Darien Library studying. At the same time, Darien High School held three showings of the documentary "Race to Nowhere," which examines students who are pushed to do too much work. "Compared to most towns, this school is really intense," Beatty said. "Everybody thinks they have to have a 4.0." Beatty and many of her classmates have not had a chance to see the film because they were so overwhelmed with studying for their tests. William Pfeiffer did get to see it, and says that h…

Neighbors Rail Against Affordable Housing Proposal Joan Carlo is one of the many residents in the neighborhood of the Stefanonis' proposed Hoyt Street affordable housing development who are against the idea. She, along with her neighbors, voiced her anger Tuesday night at the final public hearing for the project. "I emphatically do not approve of this proposed application," said Carlo, who lives on the north side of the project, next to the proposed site of a transformer. Darien Liquor Stores Won't Drink to Sunday Sales Darien liquor store owners are not happy with proposed legislation to repeal Connecticut’s ban on Sunday sales of alcohol. Proprietors like Laurence Sette of Darien Discount Wine and Spirits believe the move will hurt businesses in the long term. "Most liquor stores in Connecticut are against it," Sette said. "It's been proven with Massachusetts, Pennsylvania and New York that it doesn't really increase revenue." Sette's wife, Alicia said, "People will just buy on Sunday instead of on Saturday. It's not going to make any money. We're just going to have to spend more on utilities and hire …
