Thieves Nab $5,116 at Darien Store A team of thieves stole $5,116 in cash at Puritan Stationery in Darien by distracting the manager, police reported. At 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 4, a Hispanic man came in to purchase a $20 phone card but left only $8 on the counter to pay for it. The manager, who was the only employee working at the time, went out to get the rest of the money from the man, leaving a Hispanic female customer alone in the store. When the manager returned about five minutes later, the woman left without buying anything. The manager then noticed the money was missing and contacted the police. The money was the proc…

Rowayton Artist Dabs Local Color in Farewell Show Rowayton artist Susan O'Neill may be leaving for Key West soon, but she is leaving pieces of herself here in Connecticut. Her paintings are on view now at Atria Darien. "I've been doing some tropical paintings lately, sort of as a way to ease in," she said. She is moving to be closer to her mother, as well as to paint the tropical landscape. "It's a great place to be an artist. It's beautiful, very colorful." O'Neill paints a lot of local scenes, such as the Five Mile River and spots around Darien and Rowayton. She's done some paintings of cityscapes in New York City, and a couple of larg…
Some in Darien Coast Through Storm Some in Darien Coast Through Storm Some in Darien Coast Through Storm
Some in Darien Coast Through Storm Many residents were staying indoors as the snow fell Friday in Darien and schools let out early. But a small group of neighbors made it out to Baker Park on Noroton Avenue for some good old-fashioned winter frivolity. "I'm really surprised," one mom said as she watched her kids sled down the small hill. "Normally, this place is really full on a day like today, but there doesn't seem to be a whole lot of people out here." It might have had something to do with the advisory message issued by the Darien Police Department, warning citizens to stay off the roads. "Wet, heavy snow makes driving h…

Darien Detective Duo Serves Students Darien Detective Duo Serves Students Darien Detective Duo Serves Students
Darien Detective Duo Serves Students Mark Cappelli and Sam Boccuzzi spend their time trying to dispel the notion many kids have that cops are the bad guys. As detectives in the Darien Police Department's Youth Division, they work closely with students at the Depot and at Darien High School. "The challenge is to get kids to see that cops are normal people. This may be our job, but we had lives before we were police officers," Cappelli said. Boccuzzi agreed. "We want them to understand that every law is created to keep people safe and protect their property," he said. Boccuzzi said they are successful in conveying their message …

Tempers Flare at Hearing on Darien Senior Housing Emotions ran high again at the final public hearing on Christopher and Margaret Stefanoni's proposed affordable senior housing development on Tokeneke Road, with neighbors insisting that the development would create a potentially dangerous traffic situation. "Every resident in the neighborhood is put at risk by having this type of project," said Barry Seeman, a resident of the nearby Pheasant Run. Big concerns addressed at the Planning and Zoning Commission's hearing Tuesday included the speed of vehicles coming down the hill on Tokeneke Road and whether they might hit cars exiting the devel…

Robotics Puts Learning Gears in Motion in Darien Seven-year-old Andrew of Darien wants to be an inventor when he grows up. And he is getting a jump-start now in the robotics class taught in Town Hall by Computer Explorers. The class teaches kids the basics of robotics by letting them construct and program small robots made out of Lego. "I learned how you can use every piece to make them more complicated," Andrew said excitedly as he showed off the drumming monkey robot that his group made. The robot uses gears to move his arms up and down. Other kids made lion robots that stood up and roared, alligators that opened and closed their mouths …

Wrong Turn Lands Alleged Drug Dealer in Jail A Bridgeport man made a wrong turn into Darien, allegedly on his way to sell drugs in Shelton early last Saturday, and ended up in jail. Police arrested Jamal Jones, 23, at 4:15 a.m. after he pulled his 2002 Chevy Tahoe off Interstate 95 north at Exit 11, failed to stop at the red light and made a right turn from the wrong lane. Jones had been pulled over in Bridgeport earlier because he was suspected of carrying weapons when he was seen leaving an area where gunshots had been fired.
