However, after so much dreary weather and cloudy skies, the past couple of days in Darien have been sunny and comparatively warm. Charlotte was thrilled to get out of the house. From the second she hopped out of the car, she barely stopped running around the park, chasing her ball. Howard felt a similar joy. "I'm happy the sun's out again. Hopefully tha…

Darien Teens Offer Safe Rides To Underage Drinkers Darien teens have a safe alternative to getting behind the wheel after they drink at parties. They can call their peers at Darien Safe Rides for a ride home. Teen officers Charlotte Schaffer and Evan Burns said the service receives 10 to 15 calls each Friday and Saturday night from kids looking for rides home after parties. "Kids are still going to drink even if the program doesn't exist," Burns said. When a car goes to pick up somebody who calls, they often end up giving rides to several kids. "Having the program helps to minimize the number of kids who would otherwise be driving home drunk…

Darien Schools Axe Elementary World Language A movement by parents to have foreign languages taught in Darien's elementary schools next year has failed. The Board of Education decided Tuesday night there is not enough money to pay the five additional teachers needed to run the program. "This is the hardest decision we had to make this year," said Kim Westcott, the Board of Ed chairman. "I would like to support this, but we can't justify the five person headcount. I'm afraid we can't support it this year. I hope we can all take it on next year and make it happen." The decision to cut the program came as part of the final approval of …
