The branch fell on a transformer in the Moore Street area, police said. Firefighters responded and extinguished the fire. More than 400 residents were without power Sunday afternoon. Darien Group Pushes for Ban on Plastic Bags A group of Darien women have taken their cue from Westport and launched a movement to ban the use of plastic shopping bags in town. "We are petitioning the Selectmen to ban the use of plastic shopping bags in Darien," said Nina Miller, who helps lead the Choose to Reuse in Darien. The Darien group said that 100 billion plastic bags are thrown away in the United States every year and that they kill more than 1 million sea birds and 100,000 marine mammals and turtles every year. The group will go before the Board of Selectmen on April 11 to present their proposal. On March 6 at the Darien…
It's Time To Break Out the Birdbath It's Time To Break Out the Birdbath It's Time To Break Out the Birdbath
It's Time To Break Out the Birdbath Nina Miller of the Darien Nature Center said that with the warmer weather, we can expect to start seeing baby birds and squirrels around. Residents should start filling up their birdfeeders and birdbaths now, she said. "People don't realize how important the water in birdbaths is to the birds," Miller said. She said many geese die of dehydration because everything is frozen. Miller said baby squirrels are born in early March. Last year, she adopted five baby squirrels after a bad storm knocked over a tree and left them stranded. Two died, but she took care of the others before releasing them…

Darien Antiques Show Gives a Sneak Peak Darien Antiques Show Gives a Sneak Peak Darien Antiques Show Gives a Sneak Peak
Darien Antiques Show Gives a Sneak Peak Interior designer Carey Karlan spent Wednesday evening showing patron-level supporters of the Darien Antiques Show how vintage furniture can work with the latest trends in home décor. The event took place in a private home as a part of the lead-up to the Darien Antiques Show March 4-6. "We all have an attraction to other eras,” said the owner of The Last Detail Interior Design. “A fine antique in a room elevates everything. An old desk in a room of all sleek, modern furniture connects us to the past." Karlan said people want simple lines in furniture, which you can find in antiques. But she…

New Trains May Not Run Anytime Soon Ed Stearns read in the Metro-North Railroad newsletter Thursday morning that the new M-8 trains would be rolling in by the first quarter of the year, but like many commuters he has his doubts. "I don't believe that," Stearns said as he exited the train after his commute from New York. Metro-North has been promising the new train cars for six years, yet problems continue to delay their introduction. At a meeting of the Connecticut Rail Commuter Council on Wednesday night, Connecticut transportation Commissioner Jeffrey A. Parker said the new cars might go into service in eight weeks, blaming …
