Himes Finds Flaws in Affordable Housing Rules Himes Finds Flaws in Affordable Housing Rules Himes Finds Flaws in Affordable Housing Rules
Himes Finds Flaws in Affordable Housing Rules U.S. Rep. Jim Himes believes that the affordable housing statute 8-30g, the very law intended to help compensate for the lack of affordable housing statewide, has problems that can actually prevent the building of such housing. "It allows the developers to override Planning and Zoning. The municipality loses control, and the outcome is not a good one," Himes, D-4th District, said when he sat down with members of Main Street Connect's editorial team. He praised towns such as Darien and Stamford in being aggressive in trying to build affordable housing, even though it is hard to do. Another …

When Should You Enroll a Child in Kindergarten? When Should You Enroll a Child in Kindergarten? When Should You Enroll a Child in Kindergarten?
When Should You Enroll a Child in Kindergarten? Jeff DeTeso of the Southfield Center for Development in Darien says age should not be the most important factor for parents deciding whether to enroll a child in kindergarten. What really matters, he says, is whether a child is cognitively, emotionally and socially ready to be in a kindergarten environment. "What parents need to look at is, is the child kindergarten-ready?" DeTeso says. "Do they know their numbers, letters, colors and shapes? Do they have the social skills to interact and share with their peers? Are they ready to sit still and listen to a teacher? Age means less than being …

Darien-Rowayton Bank Donates to the Depot The Darien-Rowayton Bank donated a $250 check to the Depot on Tuesday to help it pay for office supplies. Janice Marzano, director of the Depot, said the teen center has been reusing folders for a while and also needed new ink jet cartridges. "The Darien-Rowayton Bank never forgets the Depot," Marzano said. She said the bank donates to the teen center twice a year to help it pay for items it needs most. "We think it's a great idea and a unique community resource," said Bob Kettenmann, president of the bank. Kaye Leong, the bank's assistant treasurer, agreed. "We like to support teens in the…

A white 2009 Lexus RX350 was stolen out of the Grove Street municipal parking lot while the owner was at work last Wednesday. Himes Sounds Off on Metro-North Himes Sounds Off on Metro-North Himes Sounds Off on Metro-North
Himes Sounds Off on Metro-North U.S. Rep. Jim Himes said that 100 years ago, rail transportation was more efficient than it is today. One of the reasons that service on the New Haven Line of Metro-North has been so bad for commuters is because Connecticut is not represented on the Metropolitan Transit Authority Board. "If you look at the differences between the Hudson Line, the Harlem Line and the New Haven Line, you can see that [the Hudson and Harlem lines] have modern cars with modern service," he said when he sat down with members of Main Street Connect's editorial team Wednesday. Meanwhile, riders on the New Haven Li…

Hope Soars at Leone's Stamford Victory Party It was an emotional night at Carlo Leone's campaign headquarters in Stamford after the Democrat was announced the winner of the state Senate seat vacated by Andrew McDonald. The crowd waited in anticipation every time members of Leone's team came out to post the latest poll results. When his victory in a district was announced, Leone’s supporters burst into a round of cheers. Every time his opponent, Bob Kolenberg, carried a district there was dead silence. However, there did not seem to be any doubt among those gathered about who would ultimately win. "I wouldn't have worked for him if I…
Metro-North Offers Text Updates for Riders Metro-North Offers Text Updates for Riders Metro-North Offers Text Updates for Riders
Metro-North Offers Text Updates for Riders Metro-North riders such as Zack Lehmann and Paul Simpson can now receive text message updates, making it easier for commuters to get up-to-date information on when their trains will be arriving and departing. "That will be really good, especially now," Simpson said, referring to the recent delays and scheduling problems caused by harsh winter weather. Simpson, a regular traveler on Metro-North, said the train service has been especially frustrating recently. "It's been really crowded. And they're using old cars. We were supposed to get new ones, but we haven't." He said the new service would…
Low Turnout Expected in Darien Voting Low Turnout Expected in Darien Voting Low Turnout Expected in Darien Voting
Low Turnout Expected in Darien Voting Darien voters in the 27th state Senate district (those who vote at Hindley Elementary School and Town Hall) choose Tuesday between Republican Bob Kolenberg and Democrat Carlo Leone to represent them in Hartford. Rolf Maurer is running as a Green Party write-in candidate. Turnout is expected to be low, as the special election falls in the middle of Darien schools' February break, when many families go out of town. "I think it will be slow," said former Darien First Selectman Evonne Klein, who has been campaigning for Leone. "It's at an unfortunate time. But the voters seem to be very informe…

Darien Police: Man Stole ID To Buy Cigarettes Alpha Diallo, 22, of the Bronx, N.Y., was arrested last Tuesday after stealing the identity of a Louisiana man and going on a shopping spree, police said. In September, Darien police received a call from police in Abbeville, La., that someone was using an Abbeville resident's credit cards in Darien and Norwalk. The credit cards had been used at two gas stations and a CVS in Darien to buy $357.28 worth of Newport cigarettes. Surveillance tapes showed the same person at all three stores, as well as a gray Dodge Charger with New Jersey plates. Police determined the car had been rented to Diallo…
