Metro-North Rolls Out First New M-8 Metro-North Rolls Out First New M-8 Metro-North Rolls Out First New M-8
Metro-North Rolls Out First New M-8 Darien resident Jim Cameron was one of the first people to ride Metro-North's debut M-8 train when it rolled out of Stamford at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, weeks earlier than many expected. "The ride was very smooth," said Cameron, who heads the Connecticut Rail Commuter Council. The six-car train made all the local stops on the way to Grand Central Terminal. "It's quieter than the existing cars. The windows are bigger, there's better lighting. It was very comfortable." The new cars, which were supposed to arrive last year, have been delayed by months of technical difficulties. This first set just c…

Ring's End Workers Arrested in Sting Darien police arrested two Ring's End employees last Friday in a sting operation. Philip Palma, 53, and Luis Montanaz, 50, both of Norwalk, were arrested on a warrant and charged with stealing more than $10,000 worth of materials from their workplace. Police said they received a complaint from the yard foreman, saying that both men, who work in the woodshed, would approach customers and offer to sell materials for cash. They would then sign receipts and pocket the proceeds. After undercover officers conducted an investigation, a warrant was issued. Palma was charged with sixth-degree larceny…

Darien Commuters Don't Want Hassle of Tolls Darien graduate student Paul Mowrey commutes to Fairfield University every day and appreciates not having to pay tolls. But a couple of bills now before the Connecticut General Assembly could change that. "Tolls make the commute longer and they make it more expensive," he said. The former New Jersey resident says he’s experienced firsthand how obnoxious tolls can be. The General Assembly's Transportation Committee held a public hearing recently for a group of proposals that would bring tolls back to Connecticut's highways. The most severe, Senate Bill 31, would give the transportation com…

Darien Playhouse Workers Make Oscar Picks Michael Freund, an employee at the Darien Playhouse, said he has not been paying much attention to which films have been nominated for Oscars, but he has seen some of the nominees. "I saw 'True Grit' and 'Inception.' 'True Grit' was all right. The acting was really good, but the story wasn't anything special. 'Inception' was really good," Freund said as he sold tickets at the theater's box office. With the Academy Awards on Sunday, many of the playhouse's employees were making their predictions. Minelli Vasquez, a manager at the theater, has seen more of the nominees, including "Black Swan,"…
