Darien Students Give Teachers Low Marks on Web Darien High School student Lexy Ashburne said she doesn't go to teachers' websites unless she needs to check the homework. But it can sometimes be frustrating when a teacher doesn't update the site until late at night. "Sometimes they won't update it until 10 or 12 at night, which is annoying because I want to go to sleep," Lexy said. At the Board of Education meeting Tuesday night, the board discussed how it could improve teacher websites and add more value to student learning. Matt Byrnes, assistant superintendent in charge of secondary schools, said the websites were started so teachers w…

Darien Businesses Say Tax Hikes Would Hurt Peter Troilo of Nicholas Roberts Fine Wine in Darien says Connecticut stores will have a harder time competing with those in other states under Gov. Dan Malloy’s proposed tax increases. Malloy’s plan would raise the sales tax by 0.25 percent as well as increase taxes on alcohol and gasoline. "We're losing business to border states,” Troilo said. “Massachusetts just voted to repeal its 6.25 percent tax on alcohol. Here we are trying to get more business, and instead they decide to raise taxes." [Troilo] Malloy’s plan would hike the alcohol tax, increase the gasoline tax by three cents, rai…

Thefts Investigated at Darien Whole Foods Darien Police responded to Whole Foods three times last week. At around 4 p.m. Friday a male customer accidentally left his wallet on a counter while he was making coffee. He left the store and returned later to see if it had been found. An employee had found it in the men's bathroom, but the owner discovered that $300 in cash was missing. Video surveillance showed that after the man had left his wallet on the counter, a woman had come up and taken it and placed it in her bag. She sat in the café area for a little while, and then left. Police have yet to determine how the wallet ended up in t…

Darien Documentary Is One For The Books When Manny Perez walked into the Darien Library a couple months after it was built two years ago, he was immediately inspired to create a documentary about it. His film recently won the "Best in Show" award from the Connecticut Library Association. "I was absolutely blown away. It was like walking into a Four Season Hotel," said Perez, who performed multiple duties as writer, producer, director and cameraman for his hourlong film "Darien Library: The Great Good Place." Perez worked for more than 30 years in the advertising business, mostly for the firm Young & Rubicam. A former Darien r…

Darien Connects When it Comes to Cell Phones Rikki Reitz and Hannah Artman said they never have any problems when they use their T-Mobile cell phones to make calls in Darien. Many of their friends agreed that they can stay in constant communication with each other when in town without having to worry about dropped calls. "When I'm outside in public areas, I never have any problem," said Brittany McIntyre, one of their friends. However, McIntyre said she has trouble when inside her house in the Noroton Bay area, though she thinks that might be because her house is out on the waterfront. "Inside my house it sucks, but outside anywhere el…
Love Is Not a Red, Red Rose at Darien Shop Love Is Not a Red, Red Rose at Darien Shop Love Is Not a Red, Red Rose at Darien Shop
Love Is Not a Red, Red Rose at Darien Shop Jodi Manjuck at Flowers & Flowers says red roses tend to be the most popular floral gift men give women for Valentine's Day. She adds that this is ironic since women don't really like receiving red roses. "A lot of them like different seasonal arrangements, or different color roses, but not so much the red roses," says Manjuck, whose brother Adam owns the Darien shop and designs the floral arrangements. Adam has been in business since 1997, and opened the storefront last Thanksgiving. Manjuck says they did pretty well last Valentine's Day, and are getting ready for this year. "It's st…
